CALIFORNIA ROAD TRIP – WINDING IT DOWN
California Road Trip – Winding it Down
The day before we were slated to leave, we took a beautiful scenic coastal drive down through Big Sir towards Heart Castle, and then came back through some wine country along the freeway, and again…back to the beach before dinner to enjoy the sunset.
The plan was to enjoy Carmel and the beach early morning, right after breakfast at Carmel Mission Inn , our last sunrise in Carmel-By-The-Sea, and then leave for San Francisco to spend one more night before flying home.
Again,we loved the Marina Motel so much, we had already decided to spend the night there again, so after checking in, we headed for the Fisherman’s Wharf area for dinner at sunset.
We chose Alioto’s Restaurant , known for their Italian seafood and view of the wharf and Golden Gate Bridge in the background.
Our meal was amazing, and included seafood “sausage” as an appetizer which sounds horrid but tastes amazing! The last time I was here I was with my mother when I was 15 on a short trip and one other time as a child with my mom, dad and brother, but nothing much has changed. The memories I’ve carried for years, of being on that same boat ride, under the Golden Gate, eating on the Wharf, and strolling art galleries and the beach of Carmel…held true. It was every bit as amazing as I had remembered. Thanks, Dad, for taking me there to begin with years ago.
The above photos were of my brother and I a zillion years ago feeding greedy seagulls off of the back of the same Golden Gate/Alcatraz tour boat, and that is not my dad in the red and white checkered sports coat…it was just a random. My dad was more Elvis-like! Actually, this picture is so old , that it seems to have turned my hair brown! 😉

CALIFORNIA ROAD TRIP-DAY ONE (PART 3)
the Marina Motel
We found this motel by chance, after running into a lot all day that were already booked. It’s like a tiny floral oasis !
We were not planning on spending the next day in San Francisco, or for that matter, in a hotel room, so this was a nice place to relax and stay for the evening before jaunting off tomorrow on new adventures.
We found the old time setting to be quite cozy! There was garage parking, and then you walk up to the second floor to get to your room.
I won’t even report what the price was, because it was so low, since it was after 6 when we arrived…I can only say it was extremely inexpensive compared to other places a few minutes closer to the wharf! It was also on a Thursday evening, which will always be lower than a weekend rate.
If you want to check it out, here’s the link for the Marina Motel. It’s been around since 1939, the website will tell you all about it, and has more pictures and information. We thought it was a very cool find! We were so jazzed about the place, we decided to stay there again when we came back through San Francisco on our last night!
