I don’t get out much, so when I do, getting dressed and half the fun.  The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo was the perfect opportunity to cut loose and be the Texas hot mess that I am! Lashes, bleach, pink Lancome lipstick, and rhinestones. Oh the joy! This is Texas.

It’s who I am, it takes no thought or work. When I’m trying to fit in and blend…that’s what takes work for me.

I went to the Rodeo with some friends from work.  We all ate crazy, fattening foods and all had stomach pains the next morning. It appears that wine, barbecue and ice cream don’t blend well.

I’m too sensible and internalized, but they were singing Wilson Phillips and White Snake tunes the whole way home.

Here lately, I’ve decided that loose fitting clothes are fabulous, but made an exception for the rodeo.  The jeans are Inc, and I have two identical pairs in different sizes….pudgy and not as pudgy.  The great thing about the jeans is that they have a little stretch to them!  Too much stretch makes you look saggy but these are perfect!

I also wanted to show off my trendy/easy/cool three tiered pony tail. One pony tails is too heavy and won’t stay in place, but my three small tails stay in place all day and the humidity level doesn’t matter.

The is a rehashed outfit, with the jacket being used here in my B*** On A Budget post.  The necklace from Nordstrom is the only new piece and the jacket was purchased a few months ago, and has been a winter staple.   My shopping is very light lately, and not as hard-core as it used to be, because I am more financially mature now so I love remixing old with new.

My previous Rodeo post from two years ago is shown here in Black Leather Houston Rodeo.

My looks might not be for everyone, but after years of creating outfits for customers and doing visual fashion displays and marketing, I’ve learned how to play and mix!  It’s so much easier when you have a woman with a perfect body, but as Granny used to always say, “I did the best I could with what I had,” as she often referred to her depression-era fashion and lack of perfect physique.

CASUAL CAT

CASUAL CAT

Let’s chat about my day.  It is actually a “day off.” However, I never really take much of a day off, instead there are usually a few hours within a day off that we claim as our own.

The morning starts of with Pastor John Hagee, who was on fire today on the television.  We watch him every morning when possible to jump start our day. Actually, it was a fabulous sermon, which touched on all the issues of today’s concerns.

After being emotionally jump started by our tv minister, he headed to his appointment, I got ready and went to mine, before meeting for lunch near Old Town Spring.

While waiting for him…I finally got to go inside a little cupcake place there named Cake Swirl.  I did this because I have taken it upon myself to run my own personal cupcake quality control division of the universe.

I bought two, a red velvet and a chocolate peanut butter which both still sit in the box, waiting for my approval after dinner tonight!

We went on to a casual lunch, with turned into a non casual, business discussion.  I guess we look like “bar people” because this is the second time they have seated us in the bar area of this particular restaurant. It was disturbing seeing a group of people in their 60’s getting hammered and loud in the middle of the day, and it became hard to hear each other, as we debated the finer points of SEO, real estate and tennis.

On a brighter note, I am enjoying being budget-aware this season, reusing things from last year, and mixing with a few new and fun things to change up the old!

shoes by Carlos Santana seen here

The Carlos Santana shoes are from last season (scandal!) but they didn’t get too much play last year, so they are still a great suede look for this season.

The Juicy bag was actually free, since I’d purchased a couple of bottles of the Viva La Juicy Noirperfume. I finally got to use it today, and in my mind anyway, it sort of replaces the hot pink Michael Kors Hamilton that I refrained from purchasing a few months ago. One of the bottles of perfume is actually being given away to one lucky follower, on October 31, 2013, in case you are interested! See details here!

I actually have some eye shadow palettes I also plan on using for Giveaways in the future, as well as other things, so join in the fun and Follow from one of the methods on the About page.

AMERICAN SUPERMODEL: MAKEUP TIPS AND TRICKS

Luxor Living nd Style, Houston Photography, Texas model, Jennifer Gunderson, Stephanie Dawn Sjoberg, Photography by Luxor, Top Houston bloggers

This is the part where I am going to show you some of the makeup and cosmetics tips I used on Jennifer for her Next American Supermodel photo shoot!(You can also see more pictures from the shoot there.)

The eyes are the window to the soul so with that in mind, I decided to play up her eyes and strong brow area. We actually laughed so hard during our conversation about eyebrows, because a lot of salons want to end up giving everyone that walks into there doors…a cookie cutter, skinny half moon brow and she’s been smart enough to stay away from that practice. Eyebrows are so important!  They can give your face the appearance of symmetry and a good brow is a rich feature.

FUNNY SIDEBAR:  I went into my bank about a year ago, and the girl at the counter started talking to me about my hair or lip color…but the conversation turned into an eyebrow conversation, against my will.  Hers were shaved off and then a thin line was tattooed on in place of them.  She adamantly searched for the number to give me to the place that did it for her. EECK!  I was polite, but I would never do that unless my eyebrows suddenly fell out into the street and I had no choice.

As for Jennifer’s lips did not need any help looking full, so we went with a barely there color and liner, to keep the main area of focus on the eyes.

I knew that I would be doing some black and white pictures, which can tend to make you look washed out if you do not enhance the architecture and bone structure of the face and define certain places well enough.

So lining the lips well, defining the brow and the hollow of the cheek, is important.

We also wanted some fun, real person shots that were full body shots therefore the makeup that may appear heavier close up, only looks more simple from further away.

My original plan was to use an old school, super glam red for the lip color, however, her eyes turned out so fabulous, and her lips are already perfectly photogenic, so we decided for a more reserved, pale and natural color.

Everyone’s face is different.  People expect to walk up to a cosmetic artist, and ask for a Kardashian look, for example…when there’s absolutely nothing to work with in that direction. In makeup, you have to step back, assess the situation, and work with what you’ve got!

Here’s the listing of make up I used for Jennifer:

Additionally, a cosmetic look for photos will look different from cosmetics for say…a date. Have you ever noticed that when you look at a picture that was taken on a day that you thought you looked great…the picture was awful? Basically, the same highlighting techniques, just on a lesser scale.

Sometimes I don’t say much, but this post merits some explanation.    We needed a break, and for several reasons…our break ended up in La Jolla, California.

Although the week off had been planned for a year, those last few days, I was so busy…I found myself packing two hours before it was time to leave for the plane.  It was because of this, that I didn’t pack very well.  Fortunately, my husband warned me about a possible “chilly” night, so I should bring a coat.

Instead, I opted for my black poncho.  Actually, I refer to it as my “snuggy.”  It’s funny because I literally wear it around the house, over my night gown if I get cold, or over my nightgown to take the dogs for an early morning walk…or even to church when I have on a dress, but don’t feel like wearing a bra and want to hide jiggles.

Hear me when I tell you, it was COLD and WINDY in La Jolla on the coast and the front desk staff saw me in some variation of outfits every single day which included my poncho and some type of hat – which was to combat the wind.

The Steven Madden booties are extremely comfortable and fun and I was so glad I packed them. It was only in haste that I grabbed a handful of hats and I was glad I did. It enabled me to be lazy and avoid the man in the hotel room constantly asking “Are you ready yet?” When it’s all very clear that I wasn’t ready yet.

While I did attempt to do some light shopping while away…it didn’t go so well, so I decided to be content with old, comfy clothes and hats and I promised myself I’d do better next time.

In the end, it didn’t matter too much because we just relaxed, and enjoyed the natural beauty that surrounds the La Jolla Cove. Sometimes it just has to be about comfort and ease. And, I had my “snuggie.”  The funny thing is that a work friend of mine has the exact same one, and she is emotionally attached to hers as well. We always laguh about how fabulous it makes anything you are wearing look, when it’s actually just a “Linus” blanket.  Oh my gosh, I am so attached to that thing!
