SIX SHOTS for JULY 2017

sunflower

1. SUMMER

Summer is here. It’s really hot. My yard is hanging on but who will live and who will die is a crapshoot. There are some fabulous surprises here and there that pop up, though. I mean…a sunflower? Wow. I’ve never had one before but there’s something old school and groovy about them.  I feel like flowers are such a gift. Each one has something to say. This one is saying, “Hi, it’s me!  Look how cute I am!  Happy summer! Enjoy life, it’s a gift!”

2. WHEN LIFE GIVES LEMONS

I planted a lemon tree at our old house, and literally a month later we found this one and decided to move. Imagine my joy when I had seen that we had two lemon trees that had been established for a quite a few years and produced zillions of lemons! I love nature and i feel guilty when I plant ornamental plants or shrubs because fruit bearing trees make more sense. I was thrilled to see the first sightings of lemons this summer.

3. COFFEE SPOT

Every day, after I get home from work, I change and run outside to suck out the last drops of sunlight. I sit with the dogs, listen to the birds chirp have a cup of coffee so that I can stay awake until bedtime, and I breathe in my life. I have stress. I have a million things I need to be doing. I put a lot of stress onto myself to meet timelines and achieve goals. The hour to sit, relax and enjoy some quiet time is my treat to myself. If my husband is with me, it isn’t quiet time anymore. We’re really working on spending time together doing nothing. He can’t sit still for very long so it’s a challenge. Typically, he starts piddling around, pulling a weed, trimming a shrub, watering a plant… while I relax. when I am alone though, there will be coffee and quiet with the Angels!

4. SUMMER SMILES

Bella is a serious lady. Pool time has become our thing together. The minute I drag a float out, both dogs are wanting to jump on. Bella prefers to sit in my lap, but they will also float alone together. We literally hang out and have a peaceful time. i think it’s weird that such a nervous little dog has decided she wants to be included in pool time but the more loving and inclusive I am with her… the more she’s come out of her hard little shell. These kooky dogs are my people. I spend more time with them than anyone else. I just wanted to share this funny shot of her on the float!

Texas fig tree

5. FIG ORCHARD

I have lemon trees, pear trees and I added a fig tree earlier this year which is already producing a small amount of figs! So by “fig orchard” what I really mean is that I planted a fig tree! I guess I take cell phone pictures to share with my dad so I end up with garden shots all over my phone. I have always wanted a huge fig tree so my hope is that I do not kill it and it flourishes. I dream big.

6. THE ILLUSION OF TIME

I wish I had more time. Time is everything. We literally force ourselves to sit and enjoy 20 minutes here and there. This was a Sunday morning after church time together. Hummingbirds and cardinals were around us. I am glad he loves nature and birds as much as I do.

In closing, I would hate to give the impression that I think my life is perfect. It’s a lot of hard work and planning to get to a place where things work out nicely. I try to find the joy in little things. I especially try very hard to not dwell within my inner thoughts.  There is a whole world out there, in turmoil actually. To sit and spend time trying to develop an interior sanctum of peace, wellness and joy within the walls of one’s mind is not the most intellectual path…I find it more beneficial to know what is going on in the world, and be damn glad and thankful that the world’s horrors have not yet touched my own existence.  While I feel it’s important to take a certain amount of time every day to think and plan and breathe… I find myself in a centered, well state because I am thankful. If you think about the mentally “off center” people you know, there is always a common theme.  I. Me. I feel… I  think. I. I. I.

In the past, and current, I always find myself trying to council people to wellness by begging them to crawl out of their own mental sinkhole. They always tend to remain hyper focused on their own problems, past hurts and disappointments. It’s because of this that I do not believe in focusing on your own mental state repeatedly as a path to wellness. While some introspection is certainly good, mental aerobics will not get any of us to true psychological perfection. With the life quote that most not centered people often recite, “I have to love myself before I can love others”  being a prevalent mindset in society…is it any wonder there are so many broken relationships and unhappy people? How about this…“I need to love and respect others in order to feel love and respect for myself.”

I state all of  this to highlight the point that I am happy.  I love my life.  I am fortunate to have my job, a husband that I can stand on most days, and I’m not broke. I am not the prettiest woman on the planet, but I can get by. I have emotional intelligence so I am able to make correct life decisions even when it’s things that I do not want to do. We share the same perspective on every level. we love birds and animals because we know where they come from.  I have a new business in development, although no one has faith in it, I am still hopeful.  I try to operate with integrity and treat people with dignity.

It is never my intent to leave people feeling bad.  It is my hope that everyone can find happiness within the confines of imperfection. I certainly have!

SIX SHOTS OF THE MONTH

Eiffel Tower, Paris, France, 2016 Picture of Eiffel Tower, Luxor Living and Style, Luxor Photography, Stephanie Dawn Sjoberg, travel blogger

PARIS.

Ever since I met my husband, he has always expressed  desire to take me to Paris.  It was never anything that was on my personal bucket list.  He suddenly decided at Christmas that we were actually going to go within a few months.

As for me, I decided to let his dream become a reality and after all…if a man is dying to take me to Paris who am I to snuff out his dream?  It seems like we could just hop on a plane with little planning since we do not have sucklings (as my brother calls them) but actually it’s a hassle when you have jobs, business, pets coming out of your ears and a home you don’t want to worry about when gone.  My brother come to babysit the girls when we’re gone and house sit as well.  (Be ware and don’t show up unannounced when we’re gone because he’s like me in that he will shoot and ask questions afterward.) As it should be. But back to the joy of travel…

Paris was not what I’d expected.  The French were kind. The art was amazing and the Palace at Versailles was sad to me.  Every indulgence was magnificent in it’s beauty, yet disturbing at the same time because of where the money came from origianlly to fund it. Just sayin.  My heart is for the people of France, yes…even the ones who lived hundreds of years ago and were suppressed by a greedy governmental system with a hand in the pockets of the people who work.  Oh wait…that sounds familiar.

Of course the Eiffel Tower is the beautiful symbol of Paris and France.  The romantic, cultural city and country.  While I was very glad to go and share time with my husband while he showed me around…I realized in many ways they are just like America. Tittering on the edge of financial health and worrying and wondering what the future hold for the globe.

LOVE.

He took me to Paris.  He wanted a romantic time.  I was that girl for once. I was the girl who never had a Valentine or a boyfriend.  It was as if there was no one else on the planet except us.  I had decided before we left that this was a once in a lifetime trip, so I’d wanted to be that couple in front of the Eiffel Tower, all dressed up and living the life.  It sounds stupid, but as a person who dabbles in photography…I just had to get him all dressed up and ready for a mini Paris photo shoot.  I figure pictures are the best souvenir.

The really funny part, is that we chose a day in which the wind was crazy and the air was bitter cold so truthfully, we could barely hold our eyes open due to the wind and icy cold tear drops flying out of our eyes. This is sort of why he has squinty, tight looking, Kenny Rogers type of eyes but that we got a halfway decent photo in at all is a miracle.

The red dress I was planning on wearing, was see thru red lace and it was so insanely cold and windy, I threw on a black feather dress that I’ve used for clients before in photo shoots, so the whole thing went pretty sadly. It’s so funny though, because in this photo, it seems as if all is perfect.  My canon camera fell in the mud, because the wind knocked down the tripod, and I was just ready to go home with no great Eiffel Tower photo of us together…but a nice woman who was picnicking alone in the park decided to help us out and snap a photo or two.

The best thing about this photo is that he dealt with me on this terribly cold, and windy day and tried to help me get the shot I wanted.  Is the picture perfect? Nope.  We were too close to the Eiffel Tower.  I’d wanted to be further away so that the entire thing would be off in the distant background.  I didn’t want to be a whiny bitch because he had the taxi drop us off too close. I had the man put on a suit and tie and unless he’s getting married or buried he acts as if a tie is a straight jacket. Since he wore one for me, I figured I’d better shut up and hope he doesn’t begin to rip it off like the incredible hulk. We had to walk another quarter of a block in the wind just to get further away. My new red satin shoes got messed up in the mud as I ran to catch the camera that was falling to the ground.  But we made a memory to last a lifetime and we have something to laugh about forever.

PRADA RED

The red dress I’d had created for Paris…didn’t end up in a glammy Paris blog session.  We did, however use it immediately upon returning to U.S. soil.  This is his favorite picture that he took and he’s very proud of his blog shoot.

You must understand my situation.  You know how you can have a very impatient puppy that has the desire to please you, however…he’s just a hyper puppy so he can only control his rambunctiousness to a certain degree?  Well, that’s who takes my blog photos.  He’s a super hyper, well meaning, happy, athletic, high energy type. He’s the hare to my tortoise. So, since he did so well and enjoyed himself on the Prada Red blog session… he keeps asking when we can do more.  That’s great! Finding time is rough. He was not jazzed about the red dress until he figured out that it was basically transparent. Well, and that it matched my new Paris Prada bag perfectly.  And my red shoes.  We went on to Sunday brunch afterward and I was the reddest woman in the room.   I am glad he accepts me.

BOATING

Paris has amazing dinner boats.  This was a last minute Paris boat ride in the cold and rain.  It was our first night there.  It was surreal.  All you have to do is Google Paris photos and you can see tons of shots…many much better than mine.  The shots I share are just ones that mean something to me…and they take me back.

THE ARTISTS AT MONTMARTRE

There were a few things on my bucket list once I realized that we were really going to Paris.  One of them was to get an original artwork from Paris.  As we looked around at the different art that the street artists were offering… my husband decides he wants me to sit for a portrait artist.  I am terribly shy.  Ugh.  I wasn’t emotionally prepared.  He’s very demanding, so the next thing I know, he’s discussing price with an artist and there I am. Alone. Sitting.  For two hours.  My husband leaves me to go have lunch and do more sightseeing in Montmartre.  I was sitting trying to not let my lazy eye droop, because I wasn’t really wanting it documented in my art.  I was trying to smile, yet not over smile.

I have to say…this village was my favorite part of the trip.  It is an adorable village located at the base of the Sacre Coeur Basilica, shown below.

About the artwork above? Well, Ken thinks it’s beautiful and that it looks just like me.  It’s framed and it’s in a corner of our living room. I say, she is beautiful and I only wish I looked like her.  It seems the artist forgot to add wrinkles and lines.  Either way, I got my Paris art and the memory is priceless.

CHURCH

Sacre Coeur Basilica is a Paris landmark.  It’s a church dedicated to Jesus Christ.  It’s an amazing sight from an architectural perspective.  All of that, and it just feels like a good place to go have a conversation with God.  While I am not Catholic, from a historical perspective…the building was amazing to see and experience.  Must you be in a beautiful, luxurious place for God to hear and Jesus to come? No.  Jesus can come to you when you’re in your modest garden in East Texas tending to your flowers. I support my church but I don’t believe it has to be decorated with fine art and gold to be sacred to God. But gosh this place sure was beautiful and majestic and I’m glad I got to experience it with Ken.

The perfect quick escape if you live in the Houston area, is the Golden Nugget Casino in Lake Charles that opened up in January of 2015.

We’ve been a few times and absolutely love it.  There are a zillion restaurants, live music, concerts, a fabulous pool with swim up bar, the rooms are amazing and the decor is swanky.  The best part is that it’s close to home so you could go for a day trip if you live in Houston, but it’s so much nicer to be able to stay up late and crash in your room whenever you want, and then drive home refreshed.

In a note of total honesty, and friend and I were discussing how great the room designs are…and she mentioned, “Where the hell is the baby Keurig coffee machine?” I have to say…that was a valid point, but it was perfection other than that.

My husband is a social butterfly, so we’ve run into people that he knows every time we’ve gone, stayed up too late and eaten too much. As it should be.

We’ve eaten at a lot of the restaurants there, and the food and service is always great.  Actually, hats off to the girls at the Claim Jumper because they were all so friendly and nice! The list to their restaurants is below!

The bands at the Blue Martini are always great and one night we saw Swagger Austin and had a total blast. There was even dancing involved.  Swagger is a Top 40 Cover band and so by default, every song is a hit. As a sidebar – and this is funny.  During the show I recall thinking, “Wow, cool band…and the lead singer is cute but not THAT cute.”  A few hours after the show, we ran into Olivia and I was totally shocked to see that see had an absolutely BEAUTIFUL face!  We talked for a bit, and I told her how beautiful she was and we decided that it was the lighting that was messing her up on stage!  With lighting coming from the top and the bottom instead of straight on… no one is going to look good. Beautiful and nice girl and it made us love the band even more. I’d love to do their photos because you can’t see how wonderful she is in any of their promos. We chat with one of the other members as well, and they are a pretty neat group of people.  So check their schedule in the link above and check them out the next tie they are in your area! Their show was a blast!

I’m studying up on my poker so I can sit in and be better schooled at the tables because I am not one of those super lucky people that will ever walk up to a slot machine and win $5,000.  It’s just not in me, so I feel poker might be less discriminating. For me, it’s not so much about the gambling anyway, but just about forcing myself to relax.

If you have a yacht (or a pontoon, which is all I aspire to) there is a boat dock in the back. Tilman’s was parked in the back when we were there and I must say…I never felt I needed a yacht before, but after seeing this one…maybe I do need one after all.

My girlfriends have planned a trip together in August, which will be a total blast because everyone loves to eat, drink, dance, make fun of each other (mainly of me) and eat some more.

If you’re into swanky decor, luxury, pool time, golf, tennis, the occasional drink and gamble…the maybe you should unplug at the Golden Nugget in Lake Charles.  Check out their link above for more information. You will see me there whenever I can get away!

HIRING 101: TOP PERSONAL TRAITS TO ASSESS WHEN HIRING NEW TALENT

Hiring, hiring problems, what to do when hiring, Hiring The Right Candidate, jobs, Hiring 101

A friend and I were recently having a funny discussion about the perils of hiring staff when you don’t actually know a lot about hiring.  We began joking about performing an intelligence test as well as a test for technological comprehension and how it’s needed in this day and age, depending on the company’s expectations.

While we all know there are things you can not ask a candidate, I’ve found that some interviewers make the mistake of talking too much, and listening very little. In any typical interview, you could easily listen for cues as to positive character traits as the applicant speaks throughout the interview process.

Luxor Living and Style, Hiring Well, Successful Interviewing, hiring 101, Top 6 Traits to Look for when interviewing, candidates, job interviewing skills

For years I was involved in a lot of different types of hiring, but mainly it was retail related hiring. Occasionally, I would travel to new cities and have to do a lot of hiring, firing, restructuring and some super intensive power training for a couple of the retail chains that I worked for.

Before that, I worked in the office of my father’s construction related company during my college years and watched him make hiring mistake after hiring mistake…all were very costly.  That is where I first learned the importance of hiring more on the basis of integrity than for skill set.  The bookkeeper was embezzling, the shop mechanic was being paid by a competitor to sabotage our trucking equipment as part of a hostile takeover attempt by a competitor, one salesman would turn in dinner expense receipts for Sunday brunch with his girlfriend and her child, another salesman was getting paid by us, but selling jobs to our competitor. Basically, we were losing thousands of dollars per month just from internal issues.

People with integrity sometimes fail to realize that everyone does not also possess it. They often make the mistake to assume that everyone is like them.  It is the number one thing I look for in the hiring process, Integrity or lack thereof. My father based his hiring on skill set alone as opposed to worrying with the issue of integrity. Lack of integrity can do you in, and put you under.

My husband and I debate on this issue all the time, as he typically has an innate tendency to believe the best in every person who comes along, wanting to work for his tennis coaching business, or do some sort of partnership.  I am the one who has to run background intel and then beg him to understand that when a person lies, and claims to have a Masters degree or years of in depth experience…this is going to be a bad hiring experience.

I’ve been right 100% of the time.  It’s taken him years to understand that I developed the hiring skill after years and years of experience.  Poor choices can cost you a lot of profits, and even tank your business. It doesn’t matter what type of employee you are seeking, integrity is always a key component.

In training managers on the top things to look for to be able to hire at a winning ratio (with a very small fail rate) I developed a list of the top 5 things to measure during an interview.  I had originally shared theses thoughts in a Hiring and Succession planning class with my company.  I thought I would share these facets of hiring with the universe since it’s a topic that continually gets brought up over the years as friends call with horror stories of bad hires.

In each case, if we retrace the initial interview, we can usually see the red flags that were overlooked.  In most cases, we find that the red flags were there, the hiring manager just didn’t take heed.  The common applicant is not typically skilled enough to hide the fact that they are a train wreck about to happen, so it’s up to the hiring manager to hire smart.

hiring 101, warning signs during interviews, conducting an interview, correct interviewer tips, retail interview tips

The funny thing is, as detrimental as hiring the right person can be to a company, I’ve noticed that 24 year olds, with 2 years of work experience have been doing initial interviews for big companies.  A system is usually set in place in which the executive level manager is the last person that gets to see the final applicant pool, after it’s already been weeded down by lesser level employees.  This makes no sense.  Hiring is one of the most important jobs a company has within itself.  Attempting to function well in the workplace without good quality people is hell. So enough with the ridiculous questions that you got out of that hiring manual! Have a real conversation styled interview and get to know the candidate.

Here are my 6 top hiring points to consider while interviewing and assessing your next candidate;

  1. STABILITY OF PERSONAL LIFE

I know that you are constantly told that an employee’s personal life is none of your business, but it is the number one indicator of what you’re inviting into your workplace.  Do you really think that a candidate with a problem riddled, unstable personal life is going to have any workplace stability? Usually not. While you never ask a candidate the specifics of their personal life, they usually spell it out for you throughout the interview.  “I moved here” “then I moved there” “then I moved here,” unless it was specifically to grow for work or school related progress, most conservative people think twice before pulling up stakes and moving from state to state.  I’ve found that those who are grounded, are grounded in every aspect of their lives. Another great question to ask is, “Do you have any pets?”  It seems as if some of the most responsible people, are those who have had a pet for an extended period of time.  A pet is work, and commitment.  It’s a good sign as to a person’s follow through and level of commitment. I absolutely hate it when a candidate finds a way to mention an “ex” during an interview. Ugh. Turn off.  Look for any signs of stability, follow through and commitment. While it is inappropriate to pry, it is appropriate to listen and allow the candidate to feel free to share whatever they feel important. You should be hoping for a candidate with a positive mindset in respect to any mention of their personal life.

2.  INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY

Ask you ask a candidate what they enjoy in their spare time, or about hobbies and interests…look for signs of Intellectual Curiosity.  Do they know or care anything about the world? Politics? New tax code?  Do they know who Dr Ben Carson is?  They don’t have to like him, but just knowing who a person like Ben Carson is, shows signs of life at the intellectual level. Even possessing a desire to know what is going on in the Universe, outside of one’s own bubble, is a good indicator as to the level of intelligence you are dealing with. I have friends who don’t like to read or do not wish to know anything going on in the universe.  They watch stupid cat or dog trick videos on You Tube in their spare time as a hobby. These people can still be great workers, but will be limited in growth potential. A college degree is not an accurate summation of intelligence in many cases.  I know a person with a Psychology degree who is unemployable, dumb as a rock, and a recipient of disability due to his inability to function at a level deemed sane. I’ve had degreed individuals unable to figure their sales commission earned. Possessing no inner desire for knowledge is a key indicator of intelligence. Sorry, but typically you want a person who is self motivated to excel and do well in the workplace. Intellectually interested people generally are also self motivated to excel.  Having interests in something outside of oneself is a key indicator of a person who will want to learn and grow at work, and typically intellectual curiosity is a true indicator of intelligence. Think about it…how smart could you be if you care nothing about the world that you live in and will a person like this be a good investment for your company?

3.  HEALTHY MENTAL STATUS

Mental health can never be under appreciated in the work place. People often endure stressful situations at work.  Do you want people that get rattled easily and can’t handle their emotions well in the workplace?   A good way to test for one’s ability to cope with stress, is to ask simple questions during the course of your conversation, such as “How bad was the traffic on your way here? Did it bother you? Have you ever taken a road trip by yourself? Oh, really? Where did you go?” “Do you ever go out to dinner alone?”

As your conversation blossoms and your candidate begins to feel more comfortable with you, you will easily see and hear things like he/she is uncomfortable with driving out of town alone, traffic rattles them, they are comfortable keeping life very simple, in the box.   What you are looking for is a sign that a person may be emotionally fragile. I’m sorry, but if a person gets freaked out by eating dinner out alone occasionally, they will have trouble being outgoing, which may be needed in certain work situations. As an employer, sometimes flexibility is expected of your employees.  Generally, fragile people are not flexible.  Any little kink to their regimen undermines their emotional stability.

It would also prove fruitful to be mindful of the individual’s personal filter or lack thereof.  If a person is not able to remain within professional boundaries, it’s usually a sign of issues.  Too much expressed emotion during a first meet will typically be an indicator of one who has emotions they can’t keep in check. If you are too controlling of the direction that the interview goes, you won’t get a chance to really hear and experience the individual. If they begin to run at the mouth, and can’t quit spilling their guts…good, you get to experience and learn more. This is what an interview is all about.  You need to get a feel for the real, inner person you are interviewing.  Real conversation is a good way to see through the interview persona people often put on.

A self aware and mindful person will shut up and wait for the next question.   It’s best to have a true conversation with a candidate and get the clear picture before the hire, so you can decide if they will be a fit for you. Poor mental health is a bitch in the workplace. It’s also a Protected Class.  Once it’s in, it can be disruptive to all. That’s why it’s very important to insure you are hiring correctly for the job and insuring that the candidate is a fit for the position and will be able to perform the tasks involved. Just sayin.

4.  NATURALLY ORGANIZED

A good type of question to ask in an effort to get a true picture as to an individual’s natural organization level, is to simply ask, “Tell me about a typical day for you?”

A great candidate would reply, “ I get up at 6am every day because I make my husband breakfast and we walk the dog together before he goes to work.  Then I have my free hour at my computer desk, where I read the news, check my emails, pay any bills if needed and peek at Pinterest for a few minutes before hitting the shower.  I stop every morning at my corner Starbucks to get my skinny vanilla latte and I make it into work every day at 8:30.  I take a bag lunch Monday thru Thursday, and eat out for a fancy lunch on Fridays!  I’m usually home by 6.  I force myself to hit the gym 4 days a week, unless something important is going on. I’m not going to lie though, I do give myself an hour of trashy reality T.V. before going to bed!”  (I actually know someone who says all of this, except with the addition of every detail of every calorie she takes in for the day as well.)

The point here, is not so much that she goes to the gym.  The point is the ritualism. Ritualism is in effect…organization.  She has to have her morning coffee at her special stop, the dog gets walked with the spouse ritualistically every morning. She allows herself a free hour of relaxing, trashy reality T.V. and this shows she controls time well and has organization as a natural trait.  When people do things in a certain way and time frame, they do so to   insure they have peace of mind in that they accomplished their daily tasks.  Don’t ever bother to ask a person if they are self motivated and organized in an interview, of course they will say yes.  Again, have a conversation and learn who you’re talking to.

5.  INTEGRITY

Integrity is the number one thing I look for in candidates.  An employee with a lack of integrity will get you every time.  Integrity, however, is probably the hardest component to measure in a new candidate. This is a conversation my husband and I go round and round over, when discussing whether or not to hire someone for the tennis management business he runs (with my expertise.)  Other than having an at-length, conversation styled interview with people, what else can be done to measure integrity?  Check people out.  About 6 months ago, an individual approached my husband about doing a little partnership together.  I researched the man, and discovered he had lied about having a Master’s Degree.  His entire LinkedIn resume was a twisted fabrication.  He also was caught with other lies and it was apparent that he had a Napoleon complex. He sought to make every word than came from his mouth paint a portrait of overwhelming fabulousness. Obvious issues.  I was done with the possibility of working with him after that. (There’s a whole lot more to the story, but I will omit it here, but basically, it ended poorly.)   My view is that people that lie are dangerous in the workplace.  I know quite a few people who have careers based on complete fabrications.  That’s alarming to me, and I want people with no moral code to be nowhere around me. If people lie about who they are and where they’ve been, then why expect honesty and morality in any other venue?

On the flip side, I’ve hired people with admittedly limited experience, trained them, promoted them and respected them, and was rewarded to see their careers grow, and they also helped me to be successful in my jobs as we worked together.  Integrity is everything. I’ve rarely been disappointed by a person of integrity.

6.  TECHNOLOGICAL APTITUDE

Since it is now 2015, I have to add a sixth key indicator for hiring well.  Depending on your type of business, you’ll probably need people who have some measure of technological ability. Ask your candidate which social media accounts they use, or even what type of cell phone they use.  That can be a huge indicator of their tech aptitude. The odds are absolutely zero, that an individual has a flip phone, but  has enough tech savvy to do anything more than check an email account here or there. Do they know what Skype is? Have they used it? Do they pay their bills online?  Depending on the expectations involved with the position you are hiring for, perhaps you want to discuss SEO or social media networking ideas just to get a clear and accurate picture of your candidate’s real level and understanding of today’s technology.  You may think that people can be easily trained, but some people have learning road blocks, so be sure to hire people who will be able to meet your expectations.

I promise that if you begin to follow this hiring formula for any industry, you will see better retention, more in house promotion, and an improved bottom line for your company if your staffing decisions improve. Continuous trainings of new staff can be costly, and let’s face it…it’s embarrassing when your hiring skills are questioned due to a really bad hire here and there! Too many bad hires in the same business at the same time, can take down your empire. I’ve seen it.

It’s worth mentioning that some of these qualities are also helpful when considering future friends and mates!

This year, I asked to go to San Antonio during my birthday weekend.  Nothing tremendous, but we both had really wanted to visit a church in San Antonio, so I’d figured this was a way to make it finally happen.

This low key celebration was the absolute best time ever!  After spending the night on the San Antonio River Walk, we woke early to make it 20 minutes away to church.  The church service was amazing, and actually, this one service was more powerful than the last 10 years all put together of others.

To top it off, we decided on the spur of the moment to go to lunch at the “really high spinny place,”   otherwise known as the Chart House Restaurant in the Tower of Americas building.

The view of San Antonio was amazing, romantic, lovely and the food was fabulous.  We were relaxed and happy as the restaurant view changed ever so slowly as the dome circled.  San Antonio was my birthplace, so it was nice to think of years past and how things have changed. Some good, some bad.  I constantly think of time I’d wasted in the past trying to help people that were beyond repair.  Time is so important. Money and gold are nothing without time, but time can be everything without money or gold.

As the clock refuses to quit ticking away, chipping at our time banks, I resolve that last year was a good year – especially comparatively speaking, and this one will be even better.  That being stated, it occurs to me that good years do not happen by accident, but by design.  An intentional output of effort and planning.

So, was this post a fashion post? A food post? A travel post? A little bit of everything really.  A blog post. I think that’s what originally began the term of “blog.”  A “blah- log” of events.  I’m not entirely in love with my outfit, but it’s really what I wore, so there!

I look forward to this new year.  I look forward to applying myself in work and business as well as relationships and fun!

SIX SHOTS: DECEMBER, TWO THOUSAND and FOURTEEN

1. MERRY CHRISTMAS MAKEUP

Since I work in cosmetics, I like to photograph makeup colors and techniques, but it’s an art! It’s not the same thing as a “selfie” in that you are photographing the colors of the nails, lippies, or shadows.

2. RICH GIRL NECKLACE

I decided to work on my up close shots, and loved how this blingy rich girl necklace photo came out, complete with glitter nails and studded collar! Nails are another thing that’s really hard to photograph well with out plenty of practice!

3.  KS TENNIS USA

Since I am the “S” in KSTENNISUSA.COM (or so I am told)  I help out with various media work.  My husband loves teaching tennis and takes it very seriously, so I had fun trying to capture his persona and work ethic in some new shots I took for the new website launch! He helps me with so much and is a true friend, so it’s always great when I can help him to grow his passion!

4.  AVENTUS

There are some men’s fragrances that I absolutely adore, and when I took a photo of Aventus by House of Creed, I loved the way it turned out, although it was just a camera phone shot!  The crazy silver and black glitter nails looked appropriate with the packaging, and the article on my Top 5 Men’s Fragrances can be seen here!

5.  BLACK WINTER SUNDAY

One of the very few fashion posts I did in December was Black Winter Sunday.  Any time my husband snaps a photo in which he actually focuses, is a rare and pleasant thing. :0  It’s worth mentioning that this is a real outfit, that I really wore, when I really had some place to go.  I will say, that hats are more for ease  to me than for glamour.  The girl in front of me in church, who had hair extensions crash and burn because it was so humid, wet and cold…probably wished she was cool enough for a hat. Just sayin.

6.  MAKEUP ARTIST

I think of makeup artistry is an art form. A lot of us have made the product searches and trials a bit of a hobby, as well as a career.  Photographing makeup is harder than it looks!  I mainly use my Instagram account for fragrance, cosmetics, decor tidbits and such.  It’s so much faster to post a fun lip color pic here and there on Instagram.  You know what though?  I think it’s creepy when the last 8 photos on a person’s Instagram account, are all of their own face, so I do try to keep my own makeup shots to a minimum. Plus, I’m old and I have a sleepy eye when I’m tired.   Unless you are a Krisspy or Amrezy level of a makeup artist…it’s probably best to filter in something other than your own face. Just sayin.
