CALIFORNIA ROAD TRIP- SAUSALITO & HALF MOON BAY

Half Moon Bay, Hotel

The next day’s adventure was only intended

to be a late morning breakfast followed by a nice drive down the coast towards Monterrey, buy hey…what’s the rush?

My husband decided we just hadn’t had enough of the Golden Gate, so we had to drive over it, stop and position ourselves at various spots to get the best view. we had both been there before, but the whole idea behind this trip was just to experience things together.

San Francisco

It was cold and windy so I had to resort to wearing a hat for the rest of the day.

A nice surprise was when he drove us to Sausalito and we hung out there, and ate lunch over looking the coastal town.  We relaxed and shopped all afternoon before heading to Monterrey.

Sometime along the coast as it just was beginning to get dark, he noticed a freeway sign that said “Half Moon Bay.”

There is a Kevin Costner movie we loved, “Rumor Has It” that was based around the town of Half Moon Bay, so we decided to  get off the freeway on a whim and check it out.

It was tucked away along the coast. With  merky, cold air and fog, it was getting dark, so we decided to stay.   We were able to get to the beach just at Sunset, and found this funny sign posted at the beach.

We found an old time styled  Main Street area and Half Moon Bay Inn.  It was another really neat place.  Nestled above a nice Italian restaurant , “It’s Italia,” it was the perfect  Inn.

The place was amazing, we dined downstairs, where we met a local man who told us stories about Gerard Butler filming a movie there earlier this year,  called “Chasing Mavericks.”

As we drove around the next morning, the real estate agent in me was curious as to the average price of a home there, compared to Texas and I learned that generally what you would pay $300,000 for in Houston, would cost you over $1,000,000 in Half Moon Bay.  $300,000 would possibly by you 2 bedroom condo with 1200 square feet that you don’t really want. Yes, Texas has it’s advantages.

An early morning stroll on the beach is where we met Patty, who took this picture for us. A friendly woman whose husband died a year earlier – right as they were retiring, taught us a lesson about living for now, because who knows about tomorrow…and then we were off for more coastal touring as we headed towards Monterrey !

California Road Trip -DAY ONE (PART 2)

Lombard Street , California Vacation , Luxor Living & Style , Personal Blog
After our afternoon on the wharf, pigging on some seafood snacks,

we decided to leave in the car and tour a bit while simultaneously looking for a hotel with a vacancy…. Driving up and down steep hills, enjoying the crisp, cool air, it occurred to us  to look for Lombard Street.
That is the world famous, winding road in San Francisco, peppered with wonderful foliage and homes. I am all about beautiful plants and landscapes, so we went!

It was a very touristy thing to do, but yes, we got out of our cars and joined the masses collected along the street to take photos.
My favorite flower is the hydrangea, and there were plenty so I was in heaven!

Side note:  remember the blog about the Pink & Pepper heels I just bought ?  I’d purchased them with our trip in mind, and don’t they look great?!?  I got so many compliments when I wore them. I do think I was the only person in SF without a sweatshirt on, and people were looking as if I was a Martian, but oh well !

I was perfectly comfortable in my black tiered shorts,  flowing polka dot top, blazer and scarf.  This entire outfit was from Forever 21, and the scarf was from Macy’s. The gold bag is Michael Kors and of course, the shoes are Pink & Pepper. (Which you can’t see in this picture, due to the photographer 😉 LOL )

After the Lombard Street event, we continued on to China Town…which was interesting and funny.  My husband loves hole-in-the-wall Asian restaraunts , so we stopped into one eating establishment… (and yes, we did just eat a bite on the wharf, but hey, that was two hours ago!) but we were there only briefly….and I won’t go into the story, just noting that I think our hole-in-the-wall experience cured him of his addiction.
We went to various C-Town shops, but by this point, we really needed to focus on a place to stay for the night.

Every single hotel was booked, due to the America’s Cup race being in town. So we got extremely lucky when we happened by a motel, that had only one room left!

It was only about 7 minutes from the wharf area, had a Walgreen’s next door (for snacks and all the little things you forgot to pack) and a Mel’s Diner and an Ihop just down the block for breakfast in the morning!

DAY ONE: CALIFORNIA ROAD TRIP BEGINS!

San Francisco Bridge, california road trip, travel blogger

So, with no itinerary in mind, we flew in to San Francisco to begin a week long jaunt along the California coastline !  No hotel reservations… nothing but a ticket back home one week later.  The plan was to end up where we wanted, when we wanted and not be tied down to a schedule.

This enabled us to stay at some great places, and get some last minute great deals! ( We also learned what to NOT ever do again!)

So there will be a chain of blogs on this trip with photos , videos and other snippets of information on some great places and things we came across from Sausolito to Carmel !

Our plane arrived in San Francisco on Day One of our journey , around one, and that was after a two hour delay!  This gave us plenty of time to enjoy the rest of the day in San Francisco before heading on to the next stop, the following afternoon.

After picking up the rental car, we headed straight to Fisherman’s Wharf for lunch and then decided it would be romantic to take a freezing cold, windy boat ride underneath the Golden Gate Bridge, and viewing Alcatraz up close and personal.

After the boat ride, we strolled around a bit, snacking on street vendor clam chowder and crab and people watching.

After hanging around there a while, we decided to seek shelter and find a hotel. Unfortunately, the America’s Cup race was being held in town, so most places were either sold out, or had raised the pricing due to the busy weekend, UGH!

So, the point here, is that you should check out any events that are being held in town, and that will let you know if there will be issues finding lodging.

As we drove around, we decided to stop and take photos of the famous Lumbard Street and then hit China Town (my husband LOVES asian food) before ever finding a hotel…..

CALIFORNIA ROAD TRIP- CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA

California Road Trip-

Carmel-By-The-Sea

It’s official, I can die relatively happy!  I have finally made it back to Carmel, California.

If architecture, the ocean, landscape and a pet friendly environment, is your idea of heaven, then this is it.  Just be sure to take a big sack of money with you if you plan to stay.

Carmel California, California road trip, travel

The real estate agent in me, was curious about pricing, because it can tell you a lot about the demographics of a community.  My parents had toyed with the idea of moving there more than 25 years ago, but the sensible one of the relationship decided he liked being five times as wealthy by staying in Texas as opposed to moving to Carmel.

The neat thing about living in a place with high costs, is that you could assume your standard criminal can’t afford to be there! So you are buying  a little more peace and serenity with a lower than average chance of a violent crime or robbery taking place! I actually just got sidetracked checking data on a neat site called neighborhoodscout.com   Check it out if you want to see if you have a higher-than-national-average chance of getting assaulted, robbed or both!

Even with the economy the way it currently is, $200,000 buys you something to live in that you really wouldn’t want, compared to $200,000 in Texas being a very nice place you would be proud to own.

So, back to admiring the archetecture…. charming cottages that you may drive by and think..”I could probably afford at least that one.  Well, you probably can’t.  The median home value in The Woodlands, Texas in 2009 is listed at $250,700 versus Carmel-by-the-Sea at $661,466 according to city-data.com .

Still, the charming ocean front homes, landscaping and beaches are breath taking and I wish every town in every state could be so charming so more people could enjoy the beauty on a daily basis.

During the three nights we stayed, we were content to continue coming back to “our spot” which was a bench along the trail which lined the beach. (yes, I know…it’s that damn scarf again! But gee, it was cold and you can’t fit much in a carry-on !)

We drove to Big Sir one day, which was fabulous, but we were always sure to come back to our spot by sunset. We sat, talked, met people whose pets wanted to say hello as they took their evening walk…like “Wink” the one eyed white poodle mix and the tons of other pets people had. Looking back, I should have photographed them all, it was quite a collection of pet and pet lovers we came across.  The town is known for being pet-friendly and has numerous hotels, restaurants and retail stores allowing for pets!

Everyone we happened to come across had stated proudly that their pet was a “rescue” animal.

Times have changed, and now intelligent people are proud of their choice to rescue rather than fork out hundred to thousands of dollars for a “documented” pet. I love that we are evolving!

We even came across a sunset-on-the-beach wedding, in which a blonde knock out married an older gentlemen and we watched from out bench.

There were tons of great places to dine, get coffee or , in our case, bakeries…were were on vacation after all and everyone knows you can eat whatever you want on vacation!   We did decide we couldn’t keep eating like swine, so we opted for a big breakfast at our Hotel a couple of mornings, then nibbling small the rest of the day.

Our hotel was the Carmel Mission Inn and it was a perfect find!  Again, being the weekend, all the cottage styled places were booked up, and we paid at least $200 per night less just by staying a few more blocks from the old main street style area.

Check out the link above for great Carmel Mission Inn pictures!

The last day of the California Road Trip is approaching!
