WYOMING

Jackson Hole travel

Traveling to Wyoming was never on my bucket list. I was ignorant as to the beauty and majesty that existed there. After deciding to postpone a trip to Italy and Spain, my husband came up with the idea of Wyoming. I’d had been wanting to go glamping so I set out to quickly find a cool place to stay.

I came up with the Rustic Inn at Jackson Hole. They have beautiful luxury cabins along a creek. I decided on staying there after seeing their web cam posted outside facing the creek area. While I have seen video of moose walking through the cabins, that didn’t happen during our visit!

Yellowstone National Park, travel to Wyoming, Luxor, Living and Style, blog, travel blog,

We flew in to the Salt Lake City airport early in the day so that we could enjoy the road trip to Jackson Hole. Once in Jackson, we freshened up and went out to a nice dinner before crashing early!

The altitude hit us hard, so we were tired by 8 pm! We got up early the next morning to enjoy the buffet at our hotel (yes it was actually really good!) Then we headed out to do some exploring! This was on a Friday and Yellowstone National Park was actually closed and only had one more day to the season and that would be the following day.

We drove carefully through the ice and snow, and we worked our way up the mountain – or volcano actually. We had no cell reception and no map! We literally drove for hours. We would stop here and there to take video and enjoy the beauty. we would only see a random car drive by every now and again.

Yellowstone National PArk, travel to Wyoming, Luxor, Living and Style, blog, travel blog, Ken Sjoberg, snowman, snow in Wyoming

There was even a messed up, eyeless snowman that we decided to help out with some new gummy bear eyeballs and arms! We restored him to his glory and went on our way.

We checked out the maps on our phones once we got back to our hotel that night, and realized we were 10 minutes from Old Faithful. We were left with no choice but to go back again the next day! How could we go home having been so close to the American landmark, but not have actually seen such a thing with our own eyes?

Basically you are standing at 9,000 feet and on top of a volcano/mountain however you’re wanting to look at it… that is boiling water. The altitude kicked our asses! Especially me! I was tired, bloated, had high blood pressure and was constantly looking out for Emergency Rooms in case something happened. I didn’t want to alarm my husband but it was pretty bad. I took an extra blood pressure pill and hoped for the best. Had I bothered to do any research, I could have done a few things to prepare.

Wyoming road trip, country home, living and style

We both had bought Iphones right before the trip, so I decided to leave my camera at home and see how good we could do with just the Iphone 10 and 11 models. Had we been better Canon Rebel photographers, the difference may have been bigger.

The hotel we chose had a quaint view of a creek from most of the luxury cabin rentals. Being surrounded by nature was amazing and relaxing. Oh, and that’s the only bear we saw.

Stephanie Sjoberg, Luxor Living and Style, travel blog, travel to Wyoming, hotel review in Jackson Hole, travel to Jackson Hole, Rustic Inn,

Although we never saw a live moose or bear…we had fun trying. The second day we went to Yellowstone they were actually open. As we paid the lady in the entrance booth, I asked her, “Will there be bears today? I need to see bears.” To which she replied, “There are bears, but they are wild.” She responded as if I was hoping to feed Cheetos to the bears by hand. She refuse to accommodate my humor.

We enjoy checking out real estate whenever we go on vacation. The median home price for Jackson, Wyoming was $850,000. Lord. If you compare that to the Houston average of $284,000 you can see the stark comparison. You are paying for the unspoiled beauty. The nature. Old World Americana. Rich scenery. And mainly just being a world away from the trash that has become a part of acceptable city living in today’s world. You do not realize how bad things are on the daily until you remove yourself.

This is what is real and good. Nature and people living in tandem without destroying each other. Living off of the land without destroying and blackening the air.

The majesty was surreal. On the way back to the airport, we had decided to head south through Wyoming in order to see more during our road trip. Hours and hours of beautiful land, with very few people and small towns sprinkled here and there.

Rustic Inn breakfast

The bar was cozy at our hotel. I will not pretend that we drank and partied until the wee hours because we did not. The altitude put us to bed each night by 9 pm.

Towns such as Diamondville, Wyoming were fun to stop briefly and learn about.

Diamondville, Wyoming, Wyoming road trip, travel to Wyoming

The air was clean. The skies were blue. It is the most conservative state in the country. Wyoming has not one Planned Parenthood in sight. Wyoming by far has the lowest abortion rate in the country and the highest gun ownership. One can only hope that as rich liberals move there, they hopefully do not take their crazy, state ruining ideas with them so at least the rest of us have a place to go visit and remember what the country used to be.

  1.  #HAWAII

We ended up taking a last minute vacation to visit Maui again in September.  I had always wanted to go back and take better pictures, as well as visit Hana again.  Before our reservations at Mama’s Fish House…we took a few shots in their beachfront yard.  There were couples and families everywhere trying to take selfies, so I enjoyed offering help with their photos! Mama’s Fish house was wonderful and a dinner with an ocean front view that I will never forget!

2. #ALOHA

On the way back from Hana…we pulled over to snap pictures of this perfect rainbow!  My husband loves rainbows (and puppies) so we were sort of competing with who could get the perfect shot. Maui is a magical place and everyone should be able to go once in their lifetime.  We toy with the idea of one day moving there, but for now we are happy with where we are.

We woke up to feed to Koi in our hotel’s pond every morning.  They were so big and their eyes are so big that they seem like little dogs to us!  I wanted to pick one up and hug it but the koi wouldn’t have liked that I’m sure.

7.  #HANA

I have wanted to get back to Hana for about 5 years!  The Road to Hana is magical to me.  It’s partially jungle overlooking the ocean.  It’s got winding roads with one lane bridges …which you really shouldn’t drive on your own.  It’s best to take a tour because the drivers are used to the dangerous curves and one lane areas of road.  It also frees you up to enjoy the view.  This is not the type of road trip that the driver can afford to take their eyes off of the road.

8.  #WIFELEADSHUSBAND

This is funny because there are those great photos from the travel blogger couple that shoots all of their photos this way…I think it’s #girlleadsboyfriendallovertheglobe or something…but either way my husband is getting artsy!  We were probably on our way back from our most recent shaved ice visit. Most of my photos end up across my instagram @stephaniedawnsjoberg or @bosscatbeauty for the beauty related posts!

SIX SHOTS in LAGUNA

I had the opportunity in late September to go back to Los Angeles for work.  I decided to stay an extra day, rent a car and have an adventure.

One of the neatest places I’ve ever been that touches my heart is Laguna Beach.  My husband and I go to California once a year, and we’ve made it there a few times.  I’d always wanted to stay at a certain hotel that we would eat dinner at, La Casa Del Camino.

They have a roof top restaurant with an amazing view, The Roof Top Lounge.

Just outside, there are great areas for beach front views to welcome in the morning sunrise.  I’d decide to get up super early, sit on a bench and breathe in the beauty.  I’d remembered that they had many hummingbirds flying around the plant life on the coast.  Since hummingbirds are one of my favorite things on earth…I spent an hour trying to photograph them. (Note to self…you need to go buy new camera lenses.)

I photograph for myself.  To have something to feel the beauty after I’m gone.

There was a man sitting on my bench before I got there.  I was probably bothering him with all my photos of the birds. He was bothering me by being on my bench, but I ignored the loud silence as we shared our sunrise separately together.  He obviously had depth to have gotten out of bed so early in the cold, to enjoy the early morning. Was he depressed, divorced, broke, unemployed, unhappy….what was his story, I’d wondered as I clicked away at the tiny birds. Most people at least say hello or smile so his silence was bothering me.

Later, imagine my horror when he sits alone in the breakfast area near me at the hotel. He must surely think I’m a kooky, lone traveler. Ten minutes into my breakfast, a scruffy woman comes in from the hotel above us. As she makes her way to his table, I got it.  They were on a romantic jaunt.  Looked to be married for about 10 years, and they’d probably had sex for the first time in 6 months the night before. She appeared to be totally thrilled with life, he looked to be mildly content. I absolutely love people watching.  I assume she was getting freshened up and putting on her favorite mom jeans, while he was pondering the meaning of life on the sunrise Laguna bench.

The terrible part of my beautiful morning in Laguna…is that I was alone.  I missed my husband so much that it was depressing.  I’d wanted to share this beautiful day with him.  So while I enjoyed my $800 day of independence in Laguna, it really made me appreciate that I have a loved one to share my life with.

I love being alone to think, or read or work on my varied projects… but it was a weird day of escape because I saw couples everywhere and I realized that it would have been super depressing if I didn’t have someone.

I was awake most of the night reading and waiting for the early morning. I was only going to have one shot at sunrise and didn’t want to miss it.

I ate breakfast alone with couples all around me.  Although Laguna is amazing, I was so excited to get home and see my husband who drives me insane and talks to much, constantly invading my space and always turning on every tv in the house , unaware he disturbs the beautiful silence that previously exists before he barrels through the door.

While I got to be an adult, and drive down the California freeway in totally insane traffic I might ad) I missed my freeways and my terrible Houston drivers.  I figured out that Houston traffic is not so bad after all. All in all, it was a good day to reflect and be thankful.

Laguna is amazing and were I to ever buy a lottery ticket and win, one of my homes would be there. In the meantime, I will settle for a quick California jaunt here and there through life to breathe in the beauty. I just need to take my best friend with me next time!

#DOGCATION

Somehow I find myself a dogmom to three furry little souls.  Three dogs is just a lot of dogs. Way more than only two.  It’s always a hassle to leave for a quick weekend jaunt due to having to line up a sitter for the girls.  Because of this, we decided to take a Dogcation.  Basically, we wanted to go somewhere in which we could take all three.

Since Jazzy can’t walk too far at once,  I thought I should try buying a dog stroller for her. Luckily, all three can ride together when in a pinch!  The stroller mesh zips shut, so it then becomes sort of a dog carrier for those times you want to walk peacefully through a hotel lobby or sneak them into a mall.

We decided on a quick road trip to Corpus Christi, Texas!  I found a hotel there that welcomes small dogs. These are a few shots from our Dogcation! Don’t judge, because of course a few are just cell phone shots;

7.  USS LEXINGTON  This was by far the best part of the trip!  There is a one hour informational movie on board the retired ship, that really explains how important our Navy is.  They keep America safe.  The tour reignited my respect and appreciation for all of our military.

dog stroller, pet stroller

8.  DOG STROLLER JOY   This silly dog stroller I bought has brought the girls so much joy!  Initially, it was thought it would just be a Jazzy Transport Device, but everyone loves cramming in there for a ride.  It’s good for Blanca at times because as pretty as she looks, she’s every bit as antagonistic and always looking for a fight with other dogs, no matter how big.  So for times when there’s a lot of other people or dogs, it’s easy to zip her shut in there so she doesn’t cause a scene!

SIX SHOTS OF THE MONTH

Eiffel Tower, Paris, France, 2016 Picture of Eiffel Tower, Luxor Living and Style, Luxor Photography, Stephanie Dawn Sjoberg, travel blogger

PARIS.

Ever since I met my husband, he has always expressed  desire to take me to Paris.  It was never anything that was on my personal bucket list.  He suddenly decided at Christmas that we were actually going to go within a few months.

As for me, I decided to let his dream become a reality and after all…if a man is dying to take me to Paris who am I to snuff out his dream?  It seems like we could just hop on a plane with little planning since we do not have sucklings (as my brother calls them) but actually it’s a hassle when you have jobs, business, pets coming out of your ears and a home you don’t want to worry about when gone.  My brother come to babysit the girls when we’re gone and house sit as well.  (Be ware and don’t show up unannounced when we’re gone because he’s like me in that he will shoot and ask questions afterward.) As it should be. But back to the joy of travel…

Paris was not what I’d expected.  The French were kind. The art was amazing and the Palace at Versailles was sad to me.  Every indulgence was magnificent in it’s beauty, yet disturbing at the same time because of where the money came from origianlly to fund it. Just sayin.  My heart is for the people of France, yes…even the ones who lived hundreds of years ago and were suppressed by a greedy governmental system with a hand in the pockets of the people who work.  Oh wait…that sounds familiar.

Of course the Eiffel Tower is the beautiful symbol of Paris and France.  The romantic, cultural city and country.  While I was very glad to go and share time with my husband while he showed me around…I realized in many ways they are just like America. Tittering on the edge of financial health and worrying and wondering what the future hold for the globe.

Paris, travel blog, Luxor Living and Style, Stephanie Sjoberg, KS TENNIS USA, Paris travel, Eiffel Tower, couples in front of Eiffel Tower, blogger,

LOVE.

He took me to Paris.  He wanted a romantic time.  I was that girl for once. I was the girl who never had a Valentine or a boyfriend.  It was as if there was no one else on the planet except us.  I had decided before we left that this was a once in a lifetime trip, so I’d wanted to be that couple in front of the Eiffel Tower, all dressed up and living the life.  It sounds stupid, but as a person who dabbles in photography…I just had to get him all dressed up and ready for a mini Paris photo shoot.  I figure pictures are the best souvenir.

The really funny part, is that we chose a day in which the wind was crazy and the air was bitter cold so truthfully, we could barely hold our eyes open due to the wind and icy cold tear drops flying out of our eyes. This is sort of why he has squinty, tight looking, Kenny Rogers type of eyes but that we got a halfway decent photo in at all is a miracle.

The red dress I was planning on wearing, was see thru red lace and it was so insanely cold and windy, I threw on a black feather dress that I’ve used for clients before in photo shoots, so the whole thing went pretty sadly. It’s so funny though, because in this photo, it seems as if all is perfect.  My canon camera fell in the mud, because the wind knocked down the tripod, and I was just ready to go home with no great Eiffel Tower photo of us together…but a nice woman who was picnicking alone in the park decided to help us out and snap a photo or two.

The best thing about this photo is that he dealt with me on this terribly cold, and windy day and tried to help me get the shot I wanted.  Is the picture perfect? Nope.  We were too close to the Eiffel Tower.  I’d wanted to be further away so that the entire thing would be off in the distant background.  I didn’t want to be a whiny bitch because he had the taxi drop us off too close. I had the man put on a suit and tie and unless he’s getting married or buried he acts as if a tie is a straight jacket. Since he wore one for me, I figured I’d better shut up and hope he doesn’t begin to rip it off like the incredible hulk. We had to walk another quarter of a block in the wind just to get further away. My new red satin shoes got messed up in the mud as I ran to catch the camera that was falling to the ground.  But we made a memory to last a lifetime and we have something to laugh about forever.

PRADA RED

The red dress I’d had created for Paris…didn’t end up in a glammy Paris blog session.  We did, however use it immediately upon returning to U.S. soil.  This is his favorite picture that he took and he’s very proud of his blog shoot.

You must understand my situation.  You know how you can have a very impatient puppy that has the desire to please you, however…he’s just a hyper puppy so he can only control his rambunctiousness to a certain degree?  Well, that’s who takes my blog photos.  He’s a super hyper, well meaning, happy, athletic, high energy type. He’s the hare to my tortoise. So, since he did so well and enjoyed himself on the Prada Red blog session… he keeps asking when we can do more.  That’s great! Finding time is rough. He was not jazzed about the red dress until he figured out that it was basically transparent. Well, and that it matched my new Paris Prada bag perfectly.  And my red shoes.  We went on to Sunday brunch afterward and I was the reddest woman in the room.   I am glad he accepts me.

BOATING

Paris has amazing dinner boats.  This was a last minute Paris boat ride in the cold and rain.  It was our first night there.  It was surreal.  All you have to do is Google Paris photos and you can see tons of shots…many much better than mine.  The shots I share are just ones that mean something to me…and they take me back.

THE ARTISTS AT MONTMARTRE

There were a few things on my bucket list once I realized that we were really going to Paris.  One of them was to get an original artwork from Paris.  As we looked around at the different art that the street artists were offering… my husband decides he wants me to sit for a portrait artist.  I am terribly shy.  Ugh.  I wasn’t emotionally prepared.  He’s very demanding, so the next thing I know, he’s discussing price with an artist and there I am. Alone. Sitting.  For two hours.  My husband leaves me to go have lunch and do more sightseeing in Montmartre.  I was sitting trying to not let my lazy eye droop, because I wasn’t really wanting it documented in my art.  I was trying to smile, yet not over smile.

I have to say…this village was my favorite part of the trip.  It is an adorable village located at the base of the Sacre Coeur Basilica, shown below.

About the artwork above? Well, Ken thinks it’s beautiful and that it looks just like me.  It’s framed and it’s in a corner of our living room. I say, she is beautiful and I only wish I looked like her.  It seems the artist forgot to add wrinkles and lines.  Either way, I got my Paris art and the memory is priceless.

CHURCH

Sacre Coeur Basilica is a Paris landmark.  It’s a church dedicated to Jesus Christ.  It’s an amazing sight from an architectural perspective.  All of that, and it just feels like a good place to go have a conversation with God.  While I am not Catholic, from a historical perspective…the building was amazing to see and experience.  Must you be in a beautiful, luxurious place for God to hear and Jesus to come? No.  Jesus can come to you when you’re in your modest garden in East Texas tending to your flowers. I support my church but I don’t believe it has to be decorated with fine art and gold to be sacred to God. But gosh this place sure was beautiful and majestic and I’m glad I got to experience it with Ken.

MY ADVENTURES at HUGHES LANDING in THE WOODLANDS

Luxor Living and Style, The Woodlands, Hughes Landing, eat in The Woodlands, dining in The Woodlands, Restaurant Row, One Hughes Landing, Del Frisco's Grille, The Woodlands, travel to The Woodlands, Houston Top Blogs, Luxor,

My initial journey into the new Hughes Landing area of The Woodlands began with an invitation to attend the VIP party at Del Frisco’s Grille. The area is still growing, with new office buildings, restaurants and shops still opening up over the next few weeks and months to come. Restaurant Row, as it’s called, already has quite a few great places that have opened, and more on the way.

Since the Grand Opening of Del Frisco’s, I’ve been doing a lot of eating (and drinking) in the area.  It’s a very convenient place to meet with friends before going home after work and it’s really great how we always run into other people that we know and it helps to give your life more of a connected to the Universe feel when you run into friends.

Luxor Living and Style, The Woodlands, Hughes Landing, eat in The Woodlands, dining in The Woodlands, Restaurant Row, One Hughes Landing, Del Frisco's Grille, The Woodlands, travel to The Woodlands, Houston Top Blogs, Luxor, drinks in The Woodlands, My favorite place to go for dinner or drinks in Hughes Landing is actually Del Frisco’s Grille. My personal reasons?  The view is the best and it’s more of a quiet, reserved crowd.  If I go out with friends, I’m generally not trying to have to scream at whoever I’m with to have a conversation and be heard.  I also have a sick and twisted attachment in general to Del Frisco’s because I used to go hang out after work at the Houston Galleria location weekly, as I’d wait for traffic to die down before heading home.  I love people watching, the staff is hysterical and it’s nice to have a break in between the never ending work and home grind on the rat wheel of life.  (I think this means that I use food and my secret outings as an emotional escape but oh well.)

The food is great, drinks are fabulous and for me, and Del Frisco’s in my case is really about unplugging. It’s not like I haven’t seen a gorgeous man here or there either, but my Bull Pen is currently full so I’ll leave a few of the men for the rest of you.

While on the topic of romance, Del Frisco’s has a very sexy feel and with the lake view and a strong drink or bottle of wine, then the odds are in favor of romantic shenanigans and therefore it’s a great place for anyone to be able to set the mood if romantic entanglements are the intent. Good date place. Just sayin. (Men always want heat and nakedness but do not supply the romance, but that’s a whole different blog post.)  I actually have a fabulous lunch date for this afternoon so clearly some man has learned how to romance a lady! (I could elaborate here, but I’ll shut up.)

The Local Pour is a fun place to go, that’s also new to Hughes Landing. Sometimes there’s even live music or a DJ later in the evening and I was surprised, but the food is really, really great there as well!  While you can sit for dinner, it still has more of a party vibe, which is fine depending on your current state of mind!  On a personal note, I do not like crowds of people, but you may.  I do love music though, and the occasional crazy night of mayhem…so you may see me there again soon! We have had fun every time we’ve gone!

So far, Hughes Landing has several wonderful places to eat and drink…and I’ve been to each one many times over the past weeks.  Here’s a list of mt top picks that are open so far, and there’s more to come!

If you’re in Houston, check it out and if you’re in The Woodlands and you still have not been to Hughes Landing, OMG turn on your GPS and go exploring already! A lot of people from The Woodlands tell me that they don’t know where it is, but it’s literally not even 2 miles from the Woodlands Mall.  It’s just all the trees! I can barely get to my best friend’s house so I have to use GPS every time.
