SIX SHOTS for AUGUST 2017

Luxor Living and Style. Houston blogger, hummingbird, Luxor photography
LIFE.

There was not a lot of pro shots taken this past month! I was busy opening a new business (which you will see below) but one thing can get crossed off of my bucket list…
I absolutely love hummingbirds, and I’ve always wanted to be able to capture their beauty on camera. After Hurricane Harvey, my yard had a lot of hummingbirds going crazy around my feeder. Since it’s always been a dream of mine to successfully photograph one i decided to try – which is extremely hard unless you have a super expensive camera. This shot is not perfect, but it’s the best I could do after 3 hours of trying so I am very proud! After being trapped inside the house for 5 days… it was nice to see life picking up again.
We sustained no loss, but many did. My community is focused on rebuilding itself after the history making flooding the hurricane brought. The flooding reminded me of the birds nest I found in one of my pots about six months ago. I was watering my plant, unaware that a new nest with eggs was there. I was mortified that I may have ruined the eggs. With people, we have nests as well. We get super attached to our things and stay in our nest when we shouldn’t, just to protect our things. We think our nests are invincible to mother nature.
Prayers to those who lost loved ones in the hurricane, because this was the greatest loss of all. Hopefully, with each of these attacks by nature, we learn more and more and loss of life continues to become less.
An impressive amount of people came to help those who were trapped, which shows us even more what the mindset is of the general population – and it’s nothing like the main stream media has spent months trying to convince us that it is. If any good can come, maybe it is that we can’t let the news tell us what we think anymore.

BLANCA BEING BLANCA.

This is just a fun shot of Blanca getting in touch with her inner dog. There’s a lot of talk in my work circle lately about getting in touch with your core, all knowing self. This magazine reminded me of that. Self help should begin with yourself before trying to help others. Blanca has been getting worse and worse as she grows comfortable with us! And we are terrible parents because we laugh when she’s being bad. The other night, my husband was lifting her out of the bed, where she was lying next to me. We let then hang out in the bed during the news, but put them in their beds once lights are out. She gave a funny growl because she wanted to stay there with me! The nerve! She would never bite, but she does ‘talk” when she feels like it!

This is a quick shot I took while filming videos for the new Bosscat Beauty lash box. It’s a four pack of lashes that is available for world wide shipping! I spend many days and nights working on the box logo, company logo, lash designs, box designs, etc! I am very proud of how everything has turned out! IF you want more information, please check out www.bosscatbeauty.com
I do hope to have more products available over the next year. Everything is animal free, period. I do not believe that people are willing to put mink fur on their lashes, but I want to try and put a small dent in the amount of mink suffering there is the world – all in the name of luxury lashes. My lashes are silk, long lasting and animals won’t have to live in cages just to provide fur for your lashes!

SUMMER
This is so funny. It’s my life though. I try to carve out 30 minutes or an hour a day, to hang outside with the girls. Somehow, they decided it was cool to float with me, so they run and jump on the floats on their own now! I have a very small circle, I suppose. This is my time to sit and breathe. When they are on a flat, I don’t have to constantly get on them for chasing birds and squirrels because they can’t run away! We literally sit quietly, watch birds and relax. Sometimes I have a cup of coffee so I can stay awake until bedtime!

SIX SHOTS for JULY 2017

sunflower

1. SUMMER

Summer is here. It’s really hot. My yard is hanging on but who will live and who will die is a crapshoot. There are some fabulous surprises here and there that pop up, though. I mean…a sunflower? Wow. I’ve never had one before but there’s something old school and groovy about them.  I feel like flowers are such a gift. Each one has something to say. This one is saying, “Hi, it’s me!  Look how cute I am!  Happy summer! Enjoy life, it’s a gift!”

lemon tree, Texas lemon tree

2. WHEN LIFE GIVES LEMONS

I planted a lemon tree at our old house, and literally a month later we found this one and decided to move. Imagine my joy when I had seen that we had two lemon trees that had been established for a quite a few years and produced zillions of lemons! I love nature and i feel guilty when I plant ornamental plants or shrubs because fruit bearing trees make more sense. I was thrilled to see the first sightings of lemons this summer.

angels, garden, coffee garden

3. COFFEE SPOT

Every day, after I get home from work, I change and run outside to suck out the last drops of sunlight. I sit with the dogs, listen to the birds chirp have a cup of coffee so that I can stay awake until bedtime, and I breathe in my life. I have stress. I have a million things I need to be doing. I put a lot of stress onto myself to meet timelines and achieve goals. The hour to sit, relax and enjoy some quiet time is my treat to myself. If my husband is with me, it isn’t quiet time anymore. We’re really working on spending time together doing nothing. He can’t sit still for very long so it’s a challenge. Typically, he starts piddling around, pulling a weed, trimming a shrub, watering a plant… while I relax. when I am alone though, there will be coffee and quiet with the Angels!

dog lover, chihuahua, adopt dont shop,

4. SUMMER SMILES

Bella is a serious lady. Pool time has become our thing together. The minute I drag a float out, both dogs are wanting to jump on. Bella prefers to sit in my lap, but they will also float alone together. We literally hang out and have a peaceful time. i think it’s weird that such a nervous little dog has decided she wants to be included in pool time but the more loving and inclusive I am with her… the more she’s come out of her hard little shell. These kooky dogs are my people. I spend more time with them than anyone else. I just wanted to share this funny shot of her on the float!

Texas fig tree

5. FIG ORCHARD

I have lemon trees, pear trees and I added a fig tree earlier this year which is already producing a small amount of figs! So by “fig orchard” what I really mean is that I planted a fig tree! I guess I take cell phone pictures to share with my dad so I end up with garden shots all over my phone. I have always wanted a huge fig tree so my hope is that I do not kill it and it flourishes. I dream big.

6. THE ILLUSION OF TIME

I wish I had more time. Time is everything. We literally force ourselves to sit and enjoy 20 minutes here and there. This was a Sunday morning after church time together. Hummingbirds and cardinals were around us. I am glad he loves nature and birds as much as I do.

In closing, I would hate to give the impression that I think my life is perfect. It’s a lot of hard work and planning to get to a place where things work out nicely. I try to find the joy in little things. I especially try very hard to not dwell within my inner thoughts.  There is a whole world out there, in turmoil actually. To sit and spend time trying to develop an interior sanctum of peace, wellness and joy within the walls of one’s mind is not the most intellectual path…I find it more beneficial to know what is going on in the world, and be damn glad and thankful that the world’s horrors have not yet touched my own existence.  While I feel it’s important to take a certain amount of time every day to think and plan and breathe… I find myself in a centered, well state because I am thankful. If you think about the mentally “off center” people you know, there is always a common theme.  I. Me. I feel… I  think. I. I. I.

In the past, and current, I always find myself trying to council people to wellness by begging them to crawl out of their own mental sinkhole. They always tend to remain hyper focused on their own problems, past hurts and disappointments. It’s because of this that I do not believe in focusing on your own mental state repeatedly as a path to wellness. While some introspection is certainly good, mental aerobics will not get any of us to true psychological perfection. With the life quote that most not centered people often recite, “I have to love myself before I can love others”  being a prevalent mindset in society…is it any wonder there are so many broken relationships and unhappy people? How about this…“I need to love and respect others in order to feel love and respect for myself.”

I state all of  this to highlight the point that I am happy.  I love my life.  I am fortunate to have my job, a husband that I can stand on most days, and I’m not broke. I am not the prettiest woman on the planet, but I can get by. I have emotional intelligence so I am able to make correct life decisions even when it’s things that I do not want to do. We share the same perspective on every level. we love birds and animals because we know where they come from.  I have a new business in development, although no one has faith in it, I am still hopeful.  I try to operate with integrity and treat people with dignity.

It is never my intent to leave people feeling bad.  It is my hope that everyone can find happiness within the confines of imperfection. I certainly have!

Creation itself testifies about its Creator. King David said in the Psalms, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands” (Ps. 19:1). It is impossible to live on this planet without recognizing God, as nature is proof to His existence.

This circle of life was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen up close, so I decided to revive the monthly “Six Shots” blog post and kick it off again with my new stalking photos of a Sparrow’s nest.

One afternoon a few weeks ago…I was watering my plants and a bird came flying out of one of my pots on the front porch. I had hoped that I wasn’t watering a nest and was mortified when I saw the eggs.

The mother bird came back, and the eggs were fine because they hatched a few days later!

The mom was always gone mid day, but we met up here and there as she was bringing the babies back worms.  Of course at night, she parked herself on top of them again…warding off neighborhood cats. There was clearly an altercation one night, because all of the surrounding pots were knocked over.  We built a barricade with tennis ball hoppers for the next week to keep cats from being able to get to them too easily.

When they were just a few days old, if you whistle, the babies hold their mouths open, hoping a worm is about to drop in from mom.  After about a week, they figured out not to make a peep if mom was’t there.

I had an empty feeling when I went out to check on them almost three weeks later…and found an empty nest.  They had gotten in all their feathers and I guess had flying lessons and went on into the world with mom.

It was really neat to be able to see nature work out in the form of a bird’s nest because I am such a bird lover!

TOP TWELVE SHOTS of 2016

Luxor Living and Style, over 50 blog, Laguna Beach, over 50 blog, Daughter of The Most High

This year was the best year of my entire life. We all go through those times where it seems as if absolutely nothing we do works out.  This year wasn’t that.  This year was fabulous! I mean…I quit working out every week and therefore gained 10 pounds…but other than that…evil was thwarted on every level so it ended up being an amazing year!

There was a trip to Paris with a sweet, kind-hearted man who is in love with me, a job that I enjoy, a precious new little fur baby who needed a loving home, and a purchase of a dream home which we are now in the middle of remodeling before we move in the first week of January!

Life is hard. It’s a mine field at times. One wrong move and you can blow yourself up. I can’t imagine what having two fabulous years in a row would be like…but I’m poised and ready for 2017. Despite what a bitter Michelle Obama said about America not having hope anymore because Hillary didn’t win, I’ve never heard of a First Lady saying such a petty, shitty thing about the future President and First Lady…but I do have hope.

For 2017, I will plow ahead, and try to be happy and do better in all aspects of my life.  I will eat less, save more, love better, learn new things, take more time for gardening, cooking and resting. I will not eat candy after my morning health shake. I will post more frequently on my site.  I will start a small business I’ve been working on all year. Oh gosh, I feel busy already, but life is a business and should be run as such if you want to succeed in things big and small.  There can’t be 3 hours a day wasted in front of the T.V.  I have realized that spare time is so hard to come by, that you almost have to plan out your free time…which defeats the purpose of free time.

There is a Saturday Night Live spoof on Ivanka Trump, in which Margot Robbie says, “Every day I schedule 20 minutes of fun.”  It was so funny because it seemed so true! You have to schedule your fun because time is so hard to come by.

I love my blog because it is everything that I love…and I am sticking with it another year! I am excited to share the new home remodel because I am doing exactly what I want. No beige tile for me! My soul craves marble, crystal , mirrors and gold, and so it shall be.  My dad said, “Only fancy people put in flooring like that.”  Exactly, I thought. Paris and Versailles are a decor influence on this latest project so it’s going to be fun sharing with everyone.

I still am a cosmetics mini-guru and I’m working on some things this year that will be fun. I hope to make more videos this year, that is super fun!

Here are some highlights from 2016 and I hope you come back for 2017! Thank you for coming!

SIX SHOTS in LAGUNA

I had the opportunity in late September to go back to Los Angeles for work.  I decided to stay an extra day, rent a car and have an adventure.

One of the neatest places I’ve ever been that touches my heart is Laguna Beach.  My husband and I go to California once a year, and we’ve made it there a few times.  I’d always wanted to stay at a certain hotel that we would eat dinner at, La Casa Del Camino.

They have a roof top restaurant with an amazing view, The Roof Top Lounge.

Just outside, there are great areas for beach front views to welcome in the morning sunrise.  I’d decide to get up super early, sit on a bench and breathe in the beauty.  I’d remembered that they had many hummingbirds flying around the plant life on the coast.  Since hummingbirds are one of my favorite things on earth…I spent an hour trying to photograph them. (Note to self…you need to go buy new camera lenses.)

I photograph for myself.  To have something to feel the beauty after I’m gone.

There was a man sitting on my bench before I got there.  I was probably bothering him with all my photos of the birds. He was bothering me by being on my bench, but I ignored the loud silence as we shared our sunrise separately together.  He obviously had depth to have gotten out of bed so early in the cold, to enjoy the early morning. Was he depressed, divorced, broke, unemployed, unhappy….what was his story, I’d wondered as I clicked away at the tiny birds. Most people at least say hello or smile so his silence was bothering me.

Later, imagine my horror when he sits alone in the breakfast area near me at the hotel. He must surely think I’m a kooky, lone traveler. Ten minutes into my breakfast, a scruffy woman comes in from the hotel above us. As she makes her way to his table, I got it.  They were on a romantic jaunt.  Looked to be married for about 10 years, and they’d probably had sex for the first time in 6 months the night before. She appeared to be totally thrilled with life, he looked to be mildly content. I absolutely love people watching.  I assume she was getting freshened up and putting on her favorite mom jeans, while he was pondering the meaning of life on the sunrise Laguna bench.

The terrible part of my beautiful morning in Laguna…is that I was alone.  I missed my husband so much that it was depressing.  I’d wanted to share this beautiful day with him.  So while I enjoyed my $800 day of independence in Laguna, it really made me appreciate that I have a loved one to share my life with.

I love being alone to think, or read or work on my varied projects… but it was a weird day of escape because I saw couples everywhere and I realized that it would have been super depressing if I didn’t have someone.

I was awake most of the night reading and waiting for the early morning. I was only going to have one shot at sunrise and didn’t want to miss it.

I ate breakfast alone with couples all around me.  Although Laguna is amazing, I was so excited to get home and see my husband who drives me insane and talks to much, constantly invading my space and always turning on every tv in the house , unaware he disturbs the beautiful silence that previously exists before he barrels through the door.

While I got to be an adult, and drive down the California freeway in totally insane traffic I might ad) I missed my freeways and my terrible Houston drivers.  I figured out that Houston traffic is not so bad after all. All in all, it was a good day to reflect and be thankful.

Laguna is amazing and were I to ever buy a lottery ticket and win, one of my homes would be there. In the meantime, I will settle for a quick California jaunt here and there through life to breathe in the beauty. I just need to take my best friend with me next time!

SIX SHOTS OF THE MONTH

Eiffel Tower, Paris, France, 2016 Picture of Eiffel Tower, Luxor Living and Style, Luxor Photography, Stephanie Dawn Sjoberg, travel blogger

PARIS.

Ever since I met my husband, he has always expressed  desire to take me to Paris.  It was never anything that was on my personal bucket list.  He suddenly decided at Christmas that we were actually going to go within a few months.

As for me, I decided to let his dream become a reality and after all…if a man is dying to take me to Paris who am I to snuff out his dream?  It seems like we could just hop on a plane with little planning since we do not have sucklings (as my brother calls them) but actually it’s a hassle when you have jobs, business, pets coming out of your ears and a home you don’t want to worry about when gone.  My brother come to babysit the girls when we’re gone and house sit as well.  (Be ware and don’t show up unannounced when we’re gone because he’s like me in that he will shoot and ask questions afterward.) As it should be. But back to the joy of travel…

Paris was not what I’d expected.  The French were kind. The art was amazing and the Palace at Versailles was sad to me.  Every indulgence was magnificent in it’s beauty, yet disturbing at the same time because of where the money came from origianlly to fund it. Just sayin.  My heart is for the people of France, yes…even the ones who lived hundreds of years ago and were suppressed by a greedy governmental system with a hand in the pockets of the people who work.  Oh wait…that sounds familiar.

Of course the Eiffel Tower is the beautiful symbol of Paris and France.  The romantic, cultural city and country.  While I was very glad to go and share time with my husband while he showed me around…I realized in many ways they are just like America. Tittering on the edge of financial health and worrying and wondering what the future hold for the globe.

LOVE.

He took me to Paris.  He wanted a romantic time.  I was that girl for once. I was the girl who never had a Valentine or a boyfriend.  It was as if there was no one else on the planet except us.  I had decided before we left that this was a once in a lifetime trip, so I’d wanted to be that couple in front of the Eiffel Tower, all dressed up and living the life.  It sounds stupid, but as a person who dabbles in photography…I just had to get him all dressed up and ready for a mini Paris photo shoot.  I figure pictures are the best souvenir.

The really funny part, is that we chose a day in which the wind was crazy and the air was bitter cold so truthfully, we could barely hold our eyes open due to the wind and icy cold tear drops flying out of our eyes. This is sort of why he has squinty, tight looking, Kenny Rogers type of eyes but that we got a halfway decent photo in at all is a miracle.

The red dress I was planning on wearing, was see thru red lace and it was so insanely cold and windy, I threw on a black feather dress that I’ve used for clients before in photo shoots, so the whole thing went pretty sadly. It’s so funny though, because in this photo, it seems as if all is perfect.  My canon camera fell in the mud, because the wind knocked down the tripod, and I was just ready to go home with no great Eiffel Tower photo of us together…but a nice woman who was picnicking alone in the park decided to help us out and snap a photo or two.

The best thing about this photo is that he dealt with me on this terribly cold, and windy day and tried to help me get the shot I wanted.  Is the picture perfect? Nope.  We were too close to the Eiffel Tower.  I’d wanted to be further away so that the entire thing would be off in the distant background.  I didn’t want to be a whiny bitch because he had the taxi drop us off too close. I had the man put on a suit and tie and unless he’s getting married or buried he acts as if a tie is a straight jacket. Since he wore one for me, I figured I’d better shut up and hope he doesn’t begin to rip it off like the incredible hulk. We had to walk another quarter of a block in the wind just to get further away. My new red satin shoes got messed up in the mud as I ran to catch the camera that was falling to the ground.  But we made a memory to last a lifetime and we have something to laugh about forever.

PRADA RED

The red dress I’d had created for Paris…didn’t end up in a glammy Paris blog session.  We did, however use it immediately upon returning to U.S. soil.  This is his favorite picture that he took and he’s very proud of his blog shoot.

You must understand my situation.  You know how you can have a very impatient puppy that has the desire to please you, however…he’s just a hyper puppy so he can only control his rambunctiousness to a certain degree?  Well, that’s who takes my blog photos.  He’s a super hyper, well meaning, happy, athletic, high energy type. He’s the hare to my tortoise. So, since he did so well and enjoyed himself on the Prada Red blog session… he keeps asking when we can do more.  That’s great! Finding time is rough. He was not jazzed about the red dress until he figured out that it was basically transparent. Well, and that it matched my new Paris Prada bag perfectly.  And my red shoes.  We went on to Sunday brunch afterward and I was the reddest woman in the room.   I am glad he accepts me.

BOATING

Paris has amazing dinner boats.  This was a last minute Paris boat ride in the cold and rain.  It was our first night there.  It was surreal.  All you have to do is Google Paris photos and you can see tons of shots…many much better than mine.  The shots I share are just ones that mean something to me…and they take me back.

THE ARTISTS AT MONTMARTRE

There were a few things on my bucket list once I realized that we were really going to Paris.  One of them was to get an original artwork from Paris.  As we looked around at the different art that the street artists were offering… my husband decides he wants me to sit for a portrait artist.  I am terribly shy.  Ugh.  I wasn’t emotionally prepared.  He’s very demanding, so the next thing I know, he’s discussing price with an artist and there I am. Alone. Sitting.  For two hours.  My husband leaves me to go have lunch and do more sightseeing in Montmartre.  I was sitting trying to not let my lazy eye droop, because I wasn’t really wanting it documented in my art.  I was trying to smile, yet not over smile.

I have to say…this village was my favorite part of the trip.  It is an adorable village located at the base of the Sacre Coeur Basilica, shown below.

About the artwork above? Well, Ken thinks it’s beautiful and that it looks just like me.  It’s framed and it’s in a corner of our living room. I say, she is beautiful and I only wish I looked like her.  It seems the artist forgot to add wrinkles and lines.  Either way, I got my Paris art and the memory is priceless.

CHURCH

Sacre Coeur Basilica is a Paris landmark.  It’s a church dedicated to Jesus Christ.  It’s an amazing sight from an architectural perspective.  All of that, and it just feels like a good place to go have a conversation with God.  While I am not Catholic, from a historical perspective…the building was amazing to see and experience.  Must you be in a beautiful, luxurious place for God to hear and Jesus to come? No.  Jesus can come to you when you’re in your modest garden in East Texas tending to your flowers. I support my church but I don’t believe it has to be decorated with fine art and gold to be sacred to God. But gosh this place sure was beautiful and majestic and I’m glad I got to experience it with Ken.
