MOVIE NIGHTS: Chasing Mavericks

This movie was not marketed very well.  The poster is horrendous and the art is undesirable and wouldn’t light a fire under most people to run to the theater and see the flick.

Most of you probably didn’t even hear about it.  The only reason we did, was because when we were on vacation in August and passed through Half Moon Bay, (see the travel section of the blog) we were told about the movie that had just wrapped up filming in the area.  The locals all were excited about the movie since it was filmed in their town.
We fell in love with Half Moon Bay and waited in anticipation for the film to come out.  It was in theaters briefly so we never made it, but of course, rented it last weekend!

The movie was good, it was clean and it was real.  I love movies based on a true story, as this one was.  It was based on the young life of Jay Moriarty as well as the life of his friend, Frosty Hesson, which is played by Gerard Butler.

I love the way that Jay Moriarty was portrayed by Jonny Weston and we both loved the film, although when we sat down to watch it, we were not sure if we would. It really wasn’t just about surfing, that would be boring!  There were life lessons flying around all over the place as the characters all learned life lessons and made mistakes.

It was a nice movie and I was thrilled to finally see something I cared enough to add to my Movie Night collection!

MOVIE NIGHTS: It’s Complicated

Review for It's Complicated Movie , Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin, movie rentals, Luxor Living and Style blog
I have missed doing my Friday movie rental reviews so much the last few weeks, but it’s been so hard finding quality movies that may have slipped through the cracks.  This is a fabulous one, and when I kept asking people if they ever saw it, they said no, so here it is, being added to the Movie Nightcollection!

It’s Complicated is a wonderful movie, period.  It stars Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin and as much as I am not a fan of Alec Baldwin… he even does a wonderful job in his role!

Meryl Streep’s character is living the life of a single, older woman after her husband left her for a younger woman. (The younger woman is played by Lake Bell, who is fun to hate in her role!)  Her character is likable and fun and you will want to be friends with her.  Steve Martin is the absolute sweetest guy in this film and of course Alec plays a jerk.  A sort of, almost funny jerk… either way, they cast him well!

The scenery is beautiful and inspiring.  I do not watch movies more than once, I think that’s creepy and I do not have time to waste like that (unless it’s Steel Magnolias …my all time favorite film!) This film happened to come on last week while I lay on the sofa with Pneumonia …so I did hunker in and watch it again, because it’s so lovely!

My husband rented it from Redbox last summer, and we fell in love with it then, but I must say, when I first saw what he brought home I’d thought… oh my gosh, ANOTHER Meryl Streep movie???  How different could it be from her other zillions of films?  It’s amazing and we love it! She continues to create another entirely new character every time.

After all the hideous rentings we’ve done as of late, we have learned to follow our instinct and turn the bad ones off after 20 minutes.  If we hate you after 20 minutes, it’s probably not going to get any better.

When we sit together and carve out time for a flick, we want to enjoy our time and be happy.  I don’t want to be scared, repulsed, freaked out or horrified.  I want a nice film where I can relax and enjoy myself or possibly solve a crime.  This was a great break!

MOVIE NIGHTS: War Horse

MOVIE NIGHT REVIEWS for Luxor Living and Style , personal bloggazine
This movie came out to theaters last year at Christmas, and neither one of us had any intentions of seeing it.  I do not like movies where I will have to be sad, and quite honestly the advertising looked cold and boring to me.

My dad called and pretty much demanded that we go to see it immediately and reluctantly, we did.

War Horse was an amazing film directed by Steven Spielberg and based on a novel by the same name which came out in 1982.  The nutshell, is that a boy and his horse were separated by war and the movie follows the journey of both.

It is an amazing film in as far as the visual production, artistry, unfortunate realism and heartthat is portrayed.

This is a top quality film that will stay with you forever. It’s a total must-see, however, watch it with a friend because this one is a total journey to be shared!

MOVIE NIGHTS: He’s Just Not That Into You

When chatting with friends, it seems this is another great movie that some people have missed altogether!

This funny film came out in 2009 and the most memorable performance out of the entire all star cast was that of Ginnifer Goodwin and her kooky character who kept wanting to see hope in any small thing a guy did for her! (Hence, the title…he’s just not that into you!)Ugh! It would have been sad if it hadn’t been so funny!

The movie came up again when I was trying to explain to a friend, pontificating about an ex of his.

In his mind, if she didn’t ever call, then it was on purpose just to get back at him.  If she posted a picture on Facebook with a new guy, it was all for the sole purpose of irritating him. My theory is, if they don’t call or text or email or send smoke signals…then they just are not that into you!

This film is a hilarious stab at all of us! In my case, he’s just never that into me , until I’m gone!

Rent it if you have not seen it!

MOVIE NIGHTS: Rumour Has It

Never ever do I feel like I have so much time to burn, that I want to watch a movie for a second time, however in this case I’ve made an exception! Rumour Has It was released on DVD in 2006, but maybe you missed it !!!

We fell in love with this cute movie about a year ago when we rented it…and it forced us off the freeway we were on in California last month,  when we saw a sign that said “Half Moon Bay.”  We ended up taking a 24 hour detour and stayed the night in that town out of curiosity! (See Half Moon Bay blog here)
So we decided to watch it again this weekend, and it’s a really cute film.

It has Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Costner, Shirley MacClain and Mark Ruffalo. Basically, it’s a love story/chick flick but it’s hard to tell who’s really in love until the end!

The writing is very clever and you won’t be bored with the scenery either. I won’t bore you with the details, but everyone we asked about the movie had never seen it. (Yes, we were typical tourists while in Half Moon Bay and had asked people there if they had seen the movie, but nobody had there either!) They were too excited about the new movie that was actually filmed there this year called  Chasing Mavericks with Gerard Butler.

Back to the film, Rumour Has It…if you have not seen it, RENT IT! The scenery is amazing and the story line is witty!
