As you can tell…this home was a very clean, safe shade of beige.  Nothing wrong with it.  I prefer depth and warmth though.  Oh, and I am a rebel.  I’d wanted a more industrial look to the kitchen, so I decided by adding a black ceiling, it would help the common cabinets to pop a bit.  I may choose to mirror the back splash n the future with an antiqued look to the glass.  I was near the edge of my remodel budget so the idea was to get the major things done before move in, then the rest of the details can be worked on over time.

I used 90% of the accessories and furnishings we already owned for the kitchen and breakfast areas. Curtains, and of course lighting were the majority of budget used.  The birdcage chandelier is a great focal point, and was purchased online from Wayfair.  The issue with it, was that it came in many, many pieces. The end result was worth it, however, I wouldn’t want to do it again.  I read reviews on this particular bird cage chandelier…and assumed the people bitching about assemble time were lazy.  Turns out, I learned to heed review advice.

Charcoal paint s carried throughout, because I’d wanted continuity, but since there are tons of windows and natural light,  I wasn’t intimidated by a strong color choice.

As you can tell in the after picture…there is a dirty Blanca dollie on the floor.  I kept it there to keep it real.  We love finding her dolls laying around!

As far as fridge top decor,  this s a debate among friends, but I happen to already own the bird cages, and wanted to use them in relation to the chandelier.

The plain white curtains contrast brightly against the walls, and they are used throughout.

Next up will be sharing the living room remodel, and after that we will step into the master bedroom.

I feel like the media room needs some love, and the plans to revamp my current beauty room are being worked on.  My mother in law thought of a great way for me to utilize a custom brass headboard yet still keep it as my office/beauty room/world headquarters !

Dining Room “BEFORE”

If you have not already seen Volume 1 of my remodel, you may want to back up and take a look.  It’s a really fun remodel that we did that was heavily influenced by the trip to Paris earlier in the year. Versaille, and all the other old world glam really spoke to me so we decided to have fun and use Paris as inspiration!

Any of the “before” photos you see…were simply the ones from the real estate listing before we purchased it.  We completed the remodel before moving in.  While the house was fine on the inside, it was beige.  It didn’t speak to my soul.

The light fixtures and chandeliers really add to the mood that I was trying to create. The chandelier is named the Omni and came from ZGallerie.  The gold framed mirror was one that belonged to my mom over 35 years ago and used to hang in the dining room of my childhood home.  Looking back, mom took tons of photos of home scenes, yard scenes etc and we always made fun of her and did not understand why she did it.  She was actually blogging for herself  suppose before blogging was a thing. I should compose a “Home Style 1980 Edition” and it would be the world’s first home decor blog post.  Add that to my list of things to do.

In the reflection of my wall mirror, you can see that we used the artwork that we had done in Paris. It is more so due to the memory of being in Montmarte with all of the artists set up in the town square, and Mr. Sjoberg leaving me sitting there for my portrait for 2 and a half hours while he got to go piddle around – than it is for the actual item in itself. All I really had wanted was to get a cheap piece of art to bring home, but Mr Sjoberg decided I would get drawn. So here you have it. Cheap Paris art.

Mom’s house from 1980

We wanted an ornate, old world styled table but good Lawd… I did NOT want matching chairs and the typical “set” look.  I found the chairs one day and decided to mix up the colors, using the two black for each end as a statement.

Why on earth did I decide to paint the ceiling in Ralph Lauren Metallic Gold?  Basically, I knew I had a lot of art that I inherited that all had been framed in gold.  I wanted to mix crystal, gold and silvers.  The skylight in the entry hall, the art niches and the dining room ceiling were the only areas gold paint was used, but I feel it was just enough to add crazy glam, and to forgive the presence of my gold framed art. Just think of it as a two toned Rolex.

The white trim around the lighting helps to promote my idea of backdating the look.  A friend claimed the house has a 1920’s look when he came over. Oh joy! Somebody gets it! Another person said, “Oh.  Well is that the original flooring or the new?”  She doesn’t get me. The super large porcelain tiles are really my dream flooring.   I have to admit that the choice of flooring was also inspired by the famous Kris Jenner entry hall and primarily the same large black and white checkerboard styled flooring.

Kris Jenner entry hall, Kris Jenner flooringdenim1-4247

My entry hall, while not nearly as impressive, still has it’s high point in that the sky light above adds a fun zap of architecture. The metallic effects of the Ralph Lauren paint,  really show up well during different times of day as the lighting changes. I feel that the floor mirror in the entry adds some dimension. With all of the weird angles, it adds even more to the mix. Mirrors are a huge element throughout the house so I had wanted to carry the theme beginning with the entry.

I carried the checkerboard flooring through the entire house, except the bedrooms which have a wood laminate.  One of my main issues with the house initially, was that there was quite a variety of flooring throughout. It’s not a large house, so I felt two flooring changes were enough. Let me also add, most contractors hate to lay flooring in the diamond style, but it is imperative if you want to create the correct effect.  Laying it in the typical squared direction is going to give your floor a common, cheap effect. Actually it will also give your flooring more of a 50’s look. There is an area of Versaille that has the flooring in a diamond shape, so even they had sense back in the day.

As far as Versaille goes…it felt wrong. The sinful opulence was disturbing to us both.  I didn’t really feel that the greed of the “royals” was something to celebrate.  It made me thin of the poor, common people of France and how wrong they were done. Well…and so it continues but that’s another story. My appreciation of the architecture and art was overshadowed by the sadness of how families were treated back then. Hence, the French Revolution. Actually they could use another one right about now.

ZGallerie, Omni Chandelier, gold metallic paint, home decor, charcoal walls,

As for me and my house…there is a mindfulness about budget.  The chandelier was $900. The table, which also comes with a second leaf to extend it…was literally from Rooms to Go.  I never thought I would shop there, but it happened.  The table was only $900 because  I did not want the chairs that came with it.  Ick.  Instead I found chairs at the AtHome store which I’d never heard of before.  They cost $1200 but I thought they were worth it.

I believe in give and take with budgeting because I know of too many people who drive Mercedes but are constantly having to borrow money because they can’t budget themselves. I tried hard to use what I have, mixed with some new items in order to create a place we like to call home minus the stress over funding!

It is not easy taking great interior shots.  I need to get new camera lenses, and take a class! Add this to my list of things to do.

I hope you like my little retro French inspired dining room revamp!

The next interior post will be the kitchen and breakfast room revamp!  Beware, there are more chandeliers but then you can never have too much fabulousness. Stay posted!

“BEFORE”

Welcome to my newest home decor revamp! I’ve decided to post in increments because the entire house was redone before we moved in, about 3 months ago.  There would be way too much to post all at once in order to show the fun before-and-after pictures.  Time is really hard to come by so it will be easier to post a room at a time!

We were only vaguely considering moving when we came across this house.  My husband fell in love with the location and the lot, but after recently finishing the remodel on the last house, I was not in the mood to do it all over again, so I struck a deal with him.  I said we could buy the house, IF he would let me remodel the entire thing BEFORE moving in.  He agreed to a budget I could use on the remodel, agreed to let me do whatever I wanted.  All he cared about was getting the house.

Although this property was well taken care of, and pristine, it just wasn’t me.  The family we purchased the home from, were very nice people.  They had an open house, and a few people making offers within the first day – including us.  My husband is not perfect. At all.  That being said, I can say this…he is a very hard worker.  He deserved this house that he wanted so badly. We had no debt, no children to put through college so if the man wants this house, I wanted him to have it. All I ask is for some style. So we entered into our arrangement.  He was busy and wanted nothing to do with contractors and tile shopping. That worked out great for me!

To save money, I was the contractor and I hired out the workers and purchased all materials. By this time I had done 4 homes so it’s pretty simple…don’t get screwed over. I believe in buying your own materials so that you can more clearly see exactly what labor is costing you.

The guest bathroom in this house was modified for handicapped usage.  It, had a roll-in shower, and french doors for ease of access.  The french doors went into a bedroom that we turned into a media room, so I needed the door hole closed because it wasted a needed wall in that room.  I knew the bathroom remodel would cost the most.  I needed the french doors taken out, all tile removed, and something done with the shower.

Guest Bathroom “BEFORE”

I decided that I needed marble.  Instead of putting in a white claw foot tub, I opted for black and white marble walls.  A walk in spa shower, with a raining shower head would be acceptable for a guest bathroom.  The money saved on a tub, was used for the marble instead .  Honestly, since it’s very rare that anyone comes to stay and even if they do – most people take a shower rather than a bath when staying at someone’s house anyway.

Marble wall tile was also another way of avoiding water splatter on painted walls.  My husband shakes his hands like a dog so water gets everywhere. Marble would be glamorous and have the added benefit of being easier to clean.

I had the tile guys build a wall to keep shower splatters inside the shower area, but again, one of the great battles in life in shower glass.  I loathe shower glass.  Shower curtains are common.  This was my answer. No glass door.

revamp (1 of 1)-3

I chose the mirror from ZGallerie.  It’s named Chloe. The chandelier is from there as well.  I found the vanity on line at Home Depot.  Materials cost me about $3,000 for this bathroom. That doesn’t include labor obviously.  I love the way it turned out.

I was inspired by the trip to Paris earlier in the year.  I do not like trendy glam because it’s appeal fades quickly.  Old world glam is more fun to me. I don’t think black marble can ever be a bad thing. A little over the top? Of course.

I used spare marble around the fireplace to connect and flow, but I’ll show that in a living room post coming up!

I recently had the pleasure of being invited to a launch party of Karen Brode. It was for her launch party of Whip It Interior Design in Houston.  It was held at Christofle in The Houston Galleria.

I was not aware that Kristofle had jewelry as well as art and crystal.

I was impressed and I already am a lover of fancy little things that serve not purpose except to be lovely, so I was in heaven.  Christofle has a factory in France and everything is made by hand there. I received a lesson in metals and high end jewelry making while I was there!

Christofle, horse sculpture, Houston Galleria, silver

The housewares and decor items were exceptional. This horse sculpture was beautiful and although I am not a snake person, I appreciate the artistic design and detail of this snake and it would make an exceptional art piece for someone. Like, I don’t know…I see it on the desk of George Soros.  The horse would be more my style, but to hear about all the hands that touch each item that is crafted in France is not surprising because you can feel the quality from across the room.

The Mood Pod is the newest craze in luxury flatware.  Kris Jenner is even a partner of the brand, showing off her set on her Instagram account.  You can spend over $1000 and up to $13,000 depending on the one you chose.  You would think the price is crazy but then you touch them. You can feel quality. Smoothness and depth.  Art.

The jewelry was the same. The necklace Karen was wearing felt smooth and you could literally feel the difference between mass produced jewelry against this.

Karen’s website is linked above and she might be just the person to call if you’re wanting a home holiday revamp and advice on home decor.

I have a few home remodels and revamps under my belt.  This latest one is finished.  It was just a small nest, but my husband let me do whatever I wanted so I ended up changing it from an all white bachelor pad that didn’t look lived in and transformed it into a fun, cozy nest for two.

Pretty much the only thing that is left over from his single days, is the dining table with nude angels on the base.  I mean, who doesn’t need naked angels around the house? Oh, and the single guy, creme leather sofa set in the front office.  It kills my soul, but he won’t part with it.

We took two bedrooms, and made them into our separate offices because it was a total waste of space to have spare bedrooms when literally no one ever comes to stay over night! We have sold two beds in the past 6 months, and I have one more in the garage to deal with.

This commercial grade flooring was completely scratch resistant and made life so much easier than the previous carpeting that was there before. I am using this same flooring in the bedrooms of the new house we are remodeling because it goes with anything, doesn’t show dust like dark wood flooring does and is so extremely durable and scratch resistant.

The kitchen was probably the best part of the house, with a large center island that makes cooking a lot more enjoyable.  The large crystal chandelier over it was the focal point of the area.  Black granite was used in the kitchen, as well as in the two bathrooms.  We could not bear the thought of having different counter tops throughout such a small home.

When it came time to list this home, it sold within a week. In the mind of a new homeowner, there was literally nothing a person would need a to repair or change, except perhaps the paint.  Paint is the cheapest, easiest fix for a new homeowner. Of course it is the first thing we are changing in the new place we found, along with the flooring throughout and a bathroom revamp.  (I’ll share those pictures once it’s complete!)

I had been wanting to share this little revamp of mine for months, but never had the time!  Now that we made the decision to sell, it seems the perfect time to share! We are super excited about the move and can’t wait to share the progress on that project!

KING RANCH SADDLE SHOP

I was recently thrilled to get invited to a Grand Opening Event at King Ranch Saddle Shop’s new store in River Oaks.  I had known about their original shop, located in Kingsville, Texas so I was excited about going to the Houston opening!

I was speechless upon arrival.  There were so many types of items. A lot of things struck me as items that would be perfectfor high end gift giving. Briefcases, organizers, travel bags and bow ties for men made out of feathers! Boots,

Texas style belt buckles, home decor…I was in heaven.

I’ve been thinking that I surely am in need of a new pair of western boots and I’ve just about decided whichones to get.  Actually, the page shown here has them.. the tall wine boots on their page. What do you think?

This country chic dog plates are adorable and bold and I loved them!  They have silver dog salt and pepper shakers or deer and buck models if you prefer.  The dining table below is absolute art and I could see it fitting in with a few different home decor styles. The antler arms and silver ware are pure art.  But then I love a bold look.

There were cow hide rugs, handbags, wallets, flasks, men’s clothing, women’s clothing…it was a true brand that would make JR Ewing proud. There was something for everyone there.

I took a friend with me who is completely middle of the road when it comes to, well…everything, yet she totally loved many items there.

My weakness is furniture, so my heart rate went up when I saw the eclectic statement sofas and chairs. Check out the website for furniture if that is your thing.

So if you appreciate the finer things and have a country-fabulous side of yourself, you really ought to go intotheir store in River Oaks. As we get closer to gift giving season, keep it in mind for gift giving. There is something nice there for anyone!
