BA STAR COSMETICS

I was totally thrilled to get my brand new BA STAR Eye shadow glitter set in the mail last week!

I’d wanted to try it with several different applicator types, before doing this post…to see which worked the best.

I’d decided that the fluffy applicator blush from ELF was the best, after applying the tube of glue stick to the lid area.

I’d also filled in areas with my BA STAR shadow palette from this post, for more highlighting and contouring.

MEET JENNIFER…THE NEXT AMERICAN SUPER MODEL

THE NEXT AMERICAN SUPER MODEL

earrings from Cache, necklace from Chico’s, dress and jacket from Cache, shoes by Guess

…at least I think she should be. When I first ran into her, she reminded me of that story that you hear about Cindy Crawford getting discovered by a photographer when she was working a summer job in a corn field in Illinois.  This girl had on shorts and a t-shirt, black cowboy boots, and no makeup. She was towering over me at 5 feet and 10 inches, had a beautiful, natural tan, and was the sweetest girl ever, when I went up to introduce myself.

I immediately thought Cindy Crawford, and I knew I just had to do her makeup, hair, and style a photo shoot to compete with the best. (I’ll do a future blog post to show the make up colors and products I used to get the look.)

The thing is, I’ve worked in retail fashion for years and it would always interest me to see the models companies would choose from year to year.  One year, Cache chose a famous Italian actress as their model. That would have been wonderful were it not for the fact that Cache is not based in Italy, so it accomplished nothing to pay the actress all that money. Additionally, she was an actress…and by no means a model. To me, when a company is choosing a model to be their “face” it would make sense to pick someone that appears likable yet is inspiring.

Jennifer is a fun, but smart college girl here in Texas.  She’s never modeled before and isn’t too big on makeup, she’s more of a sporty type and her hair is not colored, her nails are not acrylic… she’s just an all-American, natural girl.

I feel like my friend who found a two carat diamond in a crack on the sidewalk!  I love doing photography sessions and makeup so this was an incredible amount of fun…especially since she let me do whatever makeup I wanted and she wore what I asked!

I think that although initially Jennifer reminded me of Cindy Crawford, once the makeup was on and hair was done…Eva Mendez and Kathy Ireland came to mind in some of the shots.

Not only is she super tall, fit and photogenic… she’s a sweet girl next door type and I’m hoping she gets contracted by a top agency over the course of the next year.

I am a supporter of the good ol’ days…when everyone didn’t use hair extensions, surgical enhancements and way too much photo shop.  I feel like she would be a good role model for younger girls.

And now I will climb down off of my soap box! I am, though, really happy to get to share my style shoot with everyone, and I will keep you posted on Jennifer, and make up tricks and tips from the shoot will be posted later!

  What do you think?

LIPS THAT LAST (lipstick tutorial)

lip tutorial, video vlog, Luxor Living and Style, lipstick blog, lip color,

Today I had lunch with  some people and one of which was a beauty business professional who had been in the industry for over 20 years.

white blonde, over 40, red lips, tutorial, beauty bloggers, Stephanie Sjoberg, Houston bloggers, lashes, Marilyn

We were in the ladies room afterwards, she was reapplying her lips, I was washing my hands, and she asked, “Why is it that you still have on lipstick, even after we ate?”

I can’t tell you how many times people ask me this, so I decided to do a quick tutorial tonight!   It’s short and fun, and I hope it’s informative!

     Thanks!

Magnificent Magnolias

Magnificent Magnolias!

Perhaps you’ve already read the blog, in which I proclaim vanilla to be the base signature scent  I use and which rocks me to my core.  So imagine my suprise when I came across Aerin Lauder’s Private Collection, Magnolia Tuberose, and totally fell in love.
It was first released in 2007, in limited distribution, on only just recently began wider distribution.

I loved it and wore it for a week, and decided it was totally not in my character to adore a floral scent so much, so I decided to do research.

Tuberose Gardenia is a relatively new scent, born in 2007 of Aerin Lauder, the granddaughter of Estee Lauder.  With the top note including lilac,  the middle with gardenia, tuberose and more, finding out the base note is what got my attention.  It is an intoxicating mixture of carnation and vanilla bourbon!  From what I gather, the gardenia and rose are what you basically smell, and it’s very strong, but the vanilla bourbon sweetens up the scent even more.

So, having been added to my collection, it stays in line with my base signature vanilla scent and enhances my ability to imprint like a fiend, I now have a strong floral which will still smell like me, since I am remaining in the vanilla realm of scent I have created for myself.

Scent is, after all, a tool.  It sends a message. There are all types of studies on scent and it’s ability to change mood and help one’s perception of the wearer.  There are even studies on scent worn at job interviews that prove the importance of scent and perceptions created by different notes.

This is a special fragrance that I love and I wanted to share!

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF SCENT

Old ladies slowly make their ways to cosmetic counters all across America to ask for the same product, Youth-Dew from their local Estee Lauder counter.   Why oh why ?

The answer is simple. Youth-Dew came out in 1943, and for anyone who’s been wearing it for over 30,40, 50 or 60 or more years…it’s like spraying on memories from decades gone by.

Fragrance brings back memories and feelings of the past.  I actually have an old bottle of Youth-Dew in a small suitcase with things belonging to my mother who had passed away16 years ago, at age 51. My mom always had expensive and strong smelling perfumes on, and although she often referred to Youth-Dew as her “cheapy,” she loved it anyway for the memories it brought forth. I recently opened it up, to inspect and see if the bottle of Youth-Dew exploded or evaporated, only to find it was still there. Once I’d sprayed it, the room filled with the presence of my mom. The perfume seemed a bit stronger than Youth-Dew normally smells, but other than that, it was still the same ol Youth-Dew. Very strong and bold. It’s not a sexy scent at all by today’s standards, however, over 250 million bottles have been sold and the product has a devout following, more than anything, due to the memories and feelings it brings and it would seem those who have coveted this frangrance for decades are truly addicted! I actually saw an Estee Lauder customer that was 106 years old, about a month ago, and she was there with her family buying the fragrance!

After having a conversation with a 19 year old about Youth-Dew sales today, it occurred to me that she and her friends might possibly be 80 years old one day, going to the mall to purchase the current Justin Bieber perfume, called Girlfriend! (A sweet, young scent.)

Wearing a scent…repeatedly…leaves an imprint on those around you. That being said, it is important to choose wisely if a positive lasting impression is your goal.  Fragrances have the abilities to tap into our memories and influence our moods, feelings, emotions and mental functioning.

Vanilla, lavender, jasmine and cinnamon have all been tested and shown to be very alluring to men, with vanilla being the most sexually arousing scent! There is no suprise then, that my personal signature scent, that I wear 75% of the time is Angel by Thierry Mugler !  I adore the scent of vanilla and I have an innate desire to feel sexy and desirable at all times! I wear it more times than not, because years ago, I’d read it was a way to imprint your image into someone’s memory. Hey, we may break up, but for the rest of his life, when he smells anything vanilla, he WILL think of me!

Light scents and musks don’t do as much for a man. Stronger scents with a punch have more impact.

My other go-to is Shalimar by Jacques Geurlain which was released in 1925, but it competes with Angel for my love.  It is rich and bold yet soft!  I used to wear it when I was a little girl, my mom would buy it for me for years from about 4th grade  through high school. Weird, I know but that was her way of making me feel pretty, I suppose. Shalimar can be described as vanilla, powdery and sweet, so you see, my top two scents of choice include the same note of vanilla, yet have various other qualities so no matter which of the two I wear, a lasting, positive impression will be created by my similar yet different fragrance wardrobe! This enables me also to choose vanilla based bath and body products which will be in harmony with the perfumes.

Choose your personal “base” scent, such as rose, ylang ylang, cinnamon or lavender and then stay within your scent’s realm in order to build and maintain your personal scent imprint!
