SIX SHOTS: August 2013

SIX SHOTS

august, two thousand and thirteen

one.

We will call this shot…”Early Morning Love.” Look at his face! It’s as if he’s thinking, “Could we get some privacy please???”  Sorry, I couldn’t resist using this for my SIX SHOTS of the Month post.

two.

This is Jennifer.  This was the first fashion shoot I’d ever created, and I love this photo from the Next American Supermodel post.  I’d dreamed of dabbling in fashion photography ever since I had the chance to meet Francesco Scavullo of Cosmopolitan fame, go to his New York Apartment and take part in a fashion shoot years ago. I met top New York make up artists, learned some things, was mesmerized by the huge photos of stars like Madonna that had adorned his loft.

So this is my Jennifer.  I did her make up, hair, styled the shoot and took the pictures. A little different than the 22 people working on a Scavullo shoot. I love that I didn’t have to crop out her waist, lengthen her arms, or distort her into an unattainable image for the rest of us to have to strive for. Completely overhauling body parts into cartoon-like imagery is nothing but graphic arts, not photography. This is just a nice girl in a pretty dress. She looks timeless yet retro glam. It could have been taken in 1988. It reminds me of all the old Scavullo Cosmopolitan Magazine covers.

three.

I just had to use this photo as well, of Jennifer in my Six Shots post. This one was used in the American Supermodel Photo Shoot Tips & Tricks blog post. It’s a great black and white photo to me and it makes me happy! Gone are the days of stiff, posed and cold photography!

Galveston Beach, Luxor, Stephanie Sjoberg, blog in Houston

four.

This beach shot is from the August in Galveston blog post. My husband took it.  He likes it. I like that he’s learning that my grill doesn’t have to be in every single shot on this blog. We had a blast. He got me out of the house and off the computer and the babies love to go somewhere and see and sniff…good memories.

five.

Yes, another fun shot – from my cell phone no less, of our day at the beach! This was on my Instagram account but I wanted to use it here because it’s so hysterical.  Jazzy has crab cake remnants dripping from her chin, and Bella is looking confused as to why there are other dogs allowed in the dining area. She wasn’t sure if this was acceptable or not. I look like a super-diva nutty nut in my big floppy hat with my crazy little dogs.

six.

Just a cell phone shot of two people taking a break from the grind and having a nice time.  I like this one, because the man on the boat who took out photo wasn’t able to focus much less get the Cincinnati skyline in the background, so this photo is totally imperfect and fun, which best sums up our lives and the Hola From Cincinnati blog post trip!

And those are some of my top pix for August, 2013. I promise to take my “big girl” camera more often this next month and rock some hot shots!

FLORENCE, KENTUCKY GARDEN INSPIRATION

Florence Kentucky home and garden, Luxor Living and Style, Ken and Stephanie Sjoberg, top blog
Years ago, I packed up and moved to the beautiful state of Kentucky. I moved there because my family had moved there, I liked it and needed a fresh start.

One afternoon, about 3 months after I’d moved there, I still had no job.  I was driving in my car one beautiful afternoon, when I suddenly heard s news report on the car stereo, in relation to the National Census Report. (If you don’t know what that is…then you probably don’t read the blog, but instead just look at the photos.)

On this gloriously uplifting news report, it was stated that Kentucky had the lowest rate of salary for female workers in the nation. It was a pivotal moment for me, in which I realized that I needed to move back to Houston. I was over qualified for 99% of the jobs that were available, and I wasn’t from the town in the first place so I didn’t have a shot.

On that note, I loved back to Texas, restarted my life and all went great, however Kentucky stillfeels so wonderful.

The air is less humid and thick. The landscape is fabulous, and the town we lived in was much more peaceful than the big, cold and cruel city.

It’s always been my dream to go back to Kentucky with my husband for a quick trip…to the Smokey Mountain area, but on this day, we took a quick jaunt to Florence, Kentucky because it wasn’t too far from Cincinnati, where we were visiting for a tennis event.

I believe late September or October is the best time to drive through Kentucky, for all the fall colors, but it was great to take a break, and see all the old Americana style homes. I enjoy landscape architecture so he humored me and let me drive around and snap some garden photos.

In gardening, I find it unbearable if a person plants..say a tropical palm in the yard of a traditional styled home.  They don’t match.  “Old school” shrubs, such as my favorite…the Hydrangea, go with old style homes.

You can make a modest home look adorable and swanky with the right landscaping.

A friend of mine and her husband just bought a swanky beach front second home along the Florida panhandle, and she was packing things to decorate the new place earlier this week.

I told her to go buy some cheap garden gnomes and to show them to her new neighbors when she gets there and say, “Hey, help me find a great spot for my garden gnomes!”

As for Kentucky, I love it, and I desperately want to go back for a fall drive through sometime, however in the meantime, I certainly got some garden inspiration from Florence, Kentucky!

Hola, From Cincinati!

Cincinnati Bridge, travel blog, Luxor Living

It was once stated about my husband…(the one I call Liverpie when he’s rotten and Alejandro when he’s being a sexy Latin man…think “Buzz Lightyear in Latin mode)…isn’t interested in going down the road unless there’s a tennis match at the end of the line.  He would go to the moon if there was to be a tennis match there, so the individual was correct.

As luck would have it, we didn’t have to go to the moon…only Cincinnati.  There was an ATP Tournament there in which it turned out that my two favorite tennis pros would actually be playing each other!

Rafa Nadal plays Rodger, Cincinati Tennis, Ks Tennis Usa, Houston tennis, Ken Sjoberg, www.kstennisusa.com, Tennis in The Woodlands

The match between Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal started right after we got there. These two top ranked players had not played each other in years in the U.S. so it was really a thrill to get to see them both together. You would have to be a tennis lover to understand I suppose, but it was a great event. I took photos for our tennis business site, but gosh it’s so hard to get great action shots in tennis, and I really wanted one with both of these guys in it.

There were many other matches after this one, but in our hearts…we’d already seen the best match a person could see in 2013.

Ken Sjoberg, Stephanie Sjoberg, KS TENNIS USA, tennis in The Woodlands, Director of Tennis, Tennis management,

For the fashion readers of the blog, however, back to me!

SIDEBAR:  I came across a Youtube video a few months back by Jenna Marbles named WHAT BITCHES WEAR TO THE AIRPORT and I laughed so hard (despite her unnecessarily foul language) because I am the bitch she’s talking about. She believes we should all wear sweatpants and flip flops I guess, when we travel because she doesn’t want to have to wait in line as we unbuckle our strappy heels and take off our accessories.  Sorry, Jenna, but I like being dressed up, plus we had somewhere to be right after we landed…but since seeing the video I’m always worried she’s going to happen to be there to call me out.  My suggestion is that she be on time, so she won’t be in a rush when the TSA feel me all over and probe me.

That was just a sidebar on fashion and today’s travel, show when you see this next picture, in which my top is a wee bit wrinkled, understand that I do at least, travel very light.  I’ve learned over the years. These days you can be on a 7 day dream trip, but my husband forbids me to bring anything more than one carry on!

Other than tennis affairs, we made time to relax and enjoy time here and there, even taking a boat ride up and down the river, and of course the Realtor in me checked out the architecture on surrounding real estate. I also like to compare the cost of living from state to state. (This way, when a future client calls me from an area…relocating to Texas, I have an idea of what they are used to when they think $599 will get them a three bedroom apartment!) Cincinnati is so much more beautiful than I thought it would be.  I’d lived in Kentucky before, years ago…but never made the drive to Cincinnati.

And yes…it’s my gold straw hat, again! It made quite a few outings this summer which is actually a good thing in the real world because it means that I got my money out of it.  Not only that, but it’s just good planning.  When you are going to be outdoors all day watching tennis, or boating… who really wants to mess with a bunch of hair blowing all over? Not me.

This next picture may seem a little odd, however, close to our hotel and the tennis facility in Mason, Ohio is the absolutely biggest surprise at Outback Steakhouse.

I have never been a huge fan of Outback in Texas. There are many nice steakhouses that are elite and prime in Houston. We were tired and hungry and it was close by, so we stopped into Outback in Mason.

We noticed the people were fabulous, and the food was exceptional.  We ended up asking the manager why the food was so much better than the ones back home, and we were told that this one was an owner/operator location.

We had actually already eaten and were about to leave, but the owner, Sam Bonasso brought us a prime rib and crab cakes to sample.  Immaculate. Impeccable. It turns out that Sam is a top of the line Chef, and apparently there are 42 million ways to cook beef, one of which, takes basically all day. Not only that, but the menu is not a typical OUTBACK menu. They have crab stuffed mushroom caps and such! So if you are ever in the Cincinnati area, you really ought to try this place! This is embarrassing, but I have to say, we ended up eating there three times in a relatively short period.

     And that’s my Cincinnati story!

GLAMOURPUSS COSMETICS TRAIN CASE

GLAMOURPUSS COSMETICS TRAIN CASE
cosmetics beauty organizer, ULTA, caboodle, Luxor Living and Style Blog
Mostly, I have been banished to the guest bathroom to do my morning rituals.  This is probably for the best since I do not share the insane need that the other party has for all things to be perfect at all times…whether running late or not. Because of this, I mainly do my makeup in this bathroom.

I was so excited to find an answer, though, to my issue of convenient cosmetics placement.

ULTA, organizer, caboodle, Luxor Living and Style Blog, fashion, decor, beauty, blogger
I found this train case at Ulta and thought it was the answer!  I can leave it closed up on the small vanity area, and yet still hide everything, yet still be able to reach the main daily staples and tools I use!
ULTA, organizer, caboodle, Luxor Living and Style Blog, fashion, decor, beauty, blogger
I love the way it opens up, and has a deep base, yet two sections on each side to help try and keep things in their place.

I close it up every morning so he is happy that there are not random products all over the counter, so it’s one less issue to combat!  (Now for the drawers!)

POISON IVY

POISON IVY

I recently heard a comedian talking about a girl with a “bitchy resting face.”  I laughed so hard because I’d never heard anyone refer to the term “resting face” before.

Then I had to wonder, is that me? Oh no, I think it might be.  Some people tell friends of mine that I look mean and we laugh about it because I am a nice person! 90% of what you are telling people, you are telling them with your body language and face.

Sometimes, there is just a lot on my mind, so walking around with a big grin painted on, is not in the forefront of my thoughts at times, hence the bitchy resting face!

With that said, in editing these photos for the blog, I took a good look at myself and realized I may not come off as the friendly and fun person I actually am!

by Michael Kors, shoes by Jessica Simpson

I love this new pleather top from Forever 21 because it’s got stretchy fabric on the sides and back so it bends and breathes. I really need the stretchy part because this past year of blogging has added 12 pounds to my frame! EECK! This year will be different!

With the new year of this blog, and all that comes with it,I’ve learned two things.  I will not gain one more pound as I will be make time for the gym again and I will work on my resting face and try to smile more!

I suppose the issue is not living here in the moment enough, but instead I am constantly thinking six months down the line. If I am walking down the road…I am not really only walking down the road.  I am thinking about my taxes, business, making dinner, have the dogs been to the Vet, why is our health insurance so high, when am I going to pay my car off, does my husband think I do enough around the house, do I care if my husband thinks I do enough around the house, why is my car insurance still so high when I keep get older every year and so does my car and various and sundry other things that warrant thought and concern.

And that’s my story! I suppose that is what is actually showing up on a bitchy resting face of most people. At least that’s my story.

MEET JENNIFER…THE NEXT AMERICAN SUPER MODEL

THE NEXT AMERICAN SUPER MODEL

earrings from Cache, necklace from Chico’s, dress and jacket from Cache, shoes by Guess

…at least I think she should be. When I first ran into her, she reminded me of that story that you hear about Cindy Crawford getting discovered by a photographer when she was working a summer job in a corn field in Illinois.  This girl had on shorts and a t-shirt, black cowboy boots, and no makeup. She was towering over me at 5 feet and 10 inches, had a beautiful, natural tan, and was the sweetest girl ever, when I went up to introduce myself.

I immediately thought Cindy Crawford, and I knew I just had to do her makeup, hair, and style a photo shoot to compete with the best. (I’ll do a future blog post to show the make up colors and products I used to get the look.)

The thing is, I’ve worked in retail fashion for years and it would always interest me to see the models companies would choose from year to year.  One year, Cache chose a famous Italian actress as their model. That would have been wonderful were it not for the fact that Cache is not based in Italy, so it accomplished nothing to pay the actress all that money. Additionally, she was an actress…and by no means a model. To me, when a company is choosing a model to be their “face” it would make sense to pick someone that appears likable yet is inspiring.

The Woodlands, Senior portraits, Luxor Living and Style, blogger in The Woodlands

Jennifer is a fun, but smart college girl here in Texas.  She’s never modeled before and isn’t too big on makeup, she’s more of a sporty type and her hair is not colored, her nails are not acrylic… she’s just an all-American, natural girl.

I feel like my friend who found a two carat diamond in a crack on the sidewalk!  I love doing photography sessions and makeup so this was an incredible amount of fun…especially since she let me do whatever makeup I wanted and she wore what I asked!

I think that although initially Jennifer reminded me of Cindy Crawford, once the makeup was on and hair was done…Eva Mendez and Kathy Ireland came to mind in some of the shots.

Not only is she super tall, fit and photogenic… she’s a sweet girl next door type and I’m hoping she gets contracted by a top agency over the course of the next year.

I am a supporter of the good ol’ days…when everyone didn’t use hair extensions, surgical enhancements and way too much photo shop.  I feel like she would be a good role model for younger girls.

And now I will climb down off of my soap box! I am, though, really happy to get to share my style shoot with everyone, and I will keep you posted on Jennifer, and make up tricks and tips from the shoot will be posted later!

  What do you think?
