SIX SHOTS: JANUARY 2013

SIX SHOTS

month one of two thousand thirteen

Wow, so January has flown by and it’s time for another “Six Shots” post!

The picture above was snapped at a place that’s been my favorite Houston restaurant for years. This is the dreary, cold, rain soaked courtyard that was so cozy to me around 6 pm New Year’s Eve. This has been my New Year’s Eve thing for years.

Prada sunglasses, Texas blonde

In my defense, my new canon camera broke this month and could not be fixed so I had to purchase a different one, which left me  with no camera for over two weeks of the month!

I like the photo above because we were reduced to using one of our old digital cameras for the blog “Perfectly Prada” and the pictures still came out acceptable enough!

The good news is that I upgraded to the Canon Rebel T3i, so all is well, and I purchased it in time to take pictures like the one below for the “Master Bedroom Re-Vamp.”

It is so hard to photograph a room, especially a black one, so after 200 shots, I really liked this shot!

master bedrooms in black, decor, bloggers in Texas, Houston, black paint, black bedroom

Have you ever had a really bad day ?  No, I mean a really bad day ?

With too much stress going on for a prolonged time, we can all break.  Long ago, I had a really bad couple of years. Only a few people really seemed to understand what I was going through, so I felt alone. Felt alone? Heck I was alone!

The one thing that really kept me on track was having a little heart to take care of and be responsible for. Jazzy.

Jazzy is calm and enjoys peaceful times, just like me. She is a rock.   I guess it’s insane the amount of love and companionship we can derive from little hearts.

I snapped this picture with my new camera, playing with the focus features.  I realized the amount of trust she had in me when I placed her up high on a big swing set and then stepped back to snap pictures from afar.  She calmly waited for me to return and lift her back down to the ground.

I suppose I try to always snap the perfect photo of her to be able to somehow show people the love I feel for her.

With that in mind, we try to pay her back and make her happy by going on tiny walks more often.

The photo of a zillion turtles crammed on a stump came during a Jazzy and Bella walk.  It appeared in the “Stealing Time” blog post.  I love how the duck kept swimming by them, everyone getting along.

movado rose gold watch

This is a shot from the “Movado” post.  It was actually just a test shot to figure out how to best shoot a watch.  It turns out to be a lot harder than it looks! Give it a shot! A watch ad with nothing in it but the watch is sort of boring, so I tried something different.

These were my Six Shots for January, 2013. The ones that told a story and meant something to me. I can’t wait to see what the new month brings!

STEALING TIME

STEALING TIME

I was not planning on doing a blog post today.  I dressed quickly, with the only thing in mind being warmth and ease because nothing overly wonderful was planned.

When my husband walked in the door, he was excited to do a blog post in what he thought was a fabulous outfit! (it’s all old stuff, girl!)

We had carved out four hours to spend together, running errands, walking dogs, and lunch.

While we were walking the dogs it was like a time warp.  Time is so hard to find but it is the most important thing any of us have.

In a remote area of the park, with only a few randoms walking around, it was like stealing time and pretending that there were not a zillion other constructive things to be doing.

My camera broke this month (yes, the NEW one I just purchased two months ago) so I upgraded to the Canon Rebel T3i and this was our first chance to use it.  Wow, there are a lot of features.

We joke that he is Francesco Scavullo , who I actually got to meet once, and had my photo done at his New York studio, but actually with this camera, one day, even Jazzy will probably become a professional photographer!

SIDEBAR:  For those of you who do not know of Francesco Scavullo…he only lived the life of the top U.S. photographer for years, getting to shoot absolutely everyone from Elizabeth Taylor to Madonna and was responsible for multitudes of magazine covers such as Cosmopolitan.  His work was before the days of airbrushing and the chopping off of half a model’s thigh in order to make the bathing suit she’s wearing look better.  We have now perversed photography and brought it to new, unattainable levels of cartoondom.

I had the pleasure of meeting my favorite photographer in New York, and was part of a photo shoot with a 5 am call, top makeup artists and tons of photography interns running around setting up the shots.  Seeing the living room decorated with his favorite shots of people like Madonna and Brooke Sheilds was amazing and impacted me forever.

bracelet – Brighton Collectibles, earrings – Charming Charlie, ring – David Yurman

I love my 30 second, messy braid.  i think it makes it look like I tried but actually is perfect for a simple day!

THE HAT MAN

 by KOKIN NEW YORK

KOKIN HATS NEW YORK, fashion hats, Luxor,

TOP HAT BY KOKIN NEW YORK

Everyone has a gift.  Everyone has a part to play in the broadway production of life.

I saw this so clearly when I recently decided to pencil in a trunk show at Tootsie’s in Houston to see hats by KOKIN New York.

Tootsies, Houston, fashion blogger,

Never mind my years in fashion companies and merchandising and designing window displays, I still had never really found myself too impressed to want to make the time for a fashion show or trunk show, however, after coming across a snippet on the internet, I found myself researching KOKIN and his amazing hats.

Within minutes of walking in the door and viewing some of the amazing creations in person, KOKIN himself was placing various hats on my head.

It was an unusual moment for me to come out of my box, but he was so polite and the hats transformed me into a worthy and royal being. They fit so perfectly and I glowed  once his hats were on my head! They were absolutely magical! On top of that, he seemed to be a really fun man oozing artistry and probably has many other artistic talents and thoughts.  Actually, if you read the Bio page on his site, he really is quite interesting.

I was in the midst of an allergy attack that was making my eyes water terribly, so I fear he may have thought I was crying with tears of joy, however as wonderful as it was to meet him and view so many gorgeous creations…I was not crying over the hats!

I found them to be perfect little (and not quite so little) sculptures that enhanced my appearance instantaneously.

While I have my crazy little hats that are acceptable to wear in my tiny realm of existence, I  had an immediate desire to live in a world in which I needed KOKIN hats!

Perhaps I should get interested in Polo Sundays at the Houston Polo Club so I can grace the world with my KOKIN hat wearing presence in all my newly found fabulousness !

KOKIN is based in New York City where he has opened a boutique on Lexington Avenue, however his hats are sold all over the globe…

from London to Paris, Tokyo to Beverly Hills. He has supplied hats to the Sex and the City characters as well as productions such as Clueless.

I believe as hair products became more industrial strength, the fashion world began banishing hats into near extinction.  Big, long hair came in for a long time, and no one really wanted to cover it up. I feel it helped to seal the U.S. extinction of high fashion hats.

Even down to brides, I remember seeing advertising without vails but instead with huge hair and tiny floral headband pieces.  Nothing was to detract from hair.

I love hats and want to live in a world where hats are the norm.

While KOKIN hats are not inexpensive, they are worth it due to the quality of structure and design.

Any type of artist or designer would be impressed, as was I, with the architecture behind each piece.  Check out the website of KOKIN New York just for fun or if you may be in the market for a fabulous, top of the line designer hat! I feel I would get more use out of one his his amazing top hat styles.  I feel I could dress it down for my lifestyle or a trip to the Houston Polo Club but they all were so fabulous.

His was a sweet and fun presence, and it was an honor to have met a person so talented and artistic.

UPDATE: LIVING ROOM ReVamp

UPDATE:

LIVING ROOM RE-VAMP

I promised myself years ago, that I would never become a “storage” person. This is one who pays monthly sums to a facility to store meaningless and depreciating assets for years until the monthly sums finally overthrow the asset’s net worth.

I, however, recently became that person.  So you can imagine I was thrilled to be able to make room for yet another storage orphan in the living room.

This animal print chaise lounge is the cheapest piece of furniture I own, but I love it!

I purchased it about 7 years ago, from a friend who was moving and didn’t have room for it.  She asked for $100, which I gladly paid.

The funny part?  One day, I was sitting on the chaise, and realized I’d never put my hands down into the sofa cushion, to see if anything good had ever fallen in.   I felt something weird….oh, an old sock.  I dug again, felt something like a dead rat body which turned out to be a baggy rolled tight with pot in it!  Quite a bit. Very dry and old.  I told the girl who sold me the sofa a few years earlier and she just laughed.

The original post of the living room re-vamp is here, if you want to see it, but basically the bench that was in the living room was moved to the master bedroom as part of that re-vamp!

I love using things I already have, it’s like cheating on the expensive game of life.  Getting ahead.

MOVIE NIGHTS: It’s Complicated

Review for It's Complicated Movie , Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin, movie rentals, Luxor Living and Style blog
I have missed doing my Friday movie rental reviews so much the last few weeks, but it’s been so hard finding quality movies that may have slipped through the cracks.  This is a fabulous one, and when I kept asking people if they ever saw it, they said no, so here it is, being added to the Movie Nightcollection!

It’s Complicated is a wonderful movie, period.  It stars Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin and as much as I am not a fan of Alec Baldwin… he even does a wonderful job in his role!

Meryl Streep’s character is living the life of a single, older woman after her husband left her for a younger woman. (The younger woman is played by Lake Bell, who is fun to hate in her role!)  Her character is likable and fun and you will want to be friends with her.  Steve Martin is the absolute sweetest guy in this film and of course Alec plays a jerk.  A sort of, almost funny jerk… either way, they cast him well!

The scenery is beautiful and inspiring.  I do not watch movies more than once, I think that’s creepy and I do not have time to waste like that (unless it’s Steel Magnolias …my all time favorite film!) This film happened to come on last week while I lay on the sofa with Pneumonia …so I did hunker in and watch it again, because it’s so lovely!

My husband rented it from Redbox last summer, and we fell in love with it then, but I must say, when I first saw what he brought home I’d thought… oh my gosh, ANOTHER Meryl Streep movie???  How different could it be from her other zillions of films?  It’s amazing and we love it! She continues to create another entirely new character every time.

After all the hideous rentings we’ve done as of late, we have learned to follow our instinct and turn the bad ones off after 20 minutes.  If we hate you after 20 minutes, it’s probably not going to get any better.

When we sit together and carve out time for a flick, we want to enjoy our time and be happy.  I don’t want to be scared, repulsed, freaked out or horrified.  I want a nice film where I can relax and enjoy myself or possibly solve a crime.  This was a great break!

MASTER BEDROOM REVAMP – Totally Haute In Black

Where to begin my tale of the re-vamp?  Well, if you’ve seen any of the other re-vamp posts like the kitchen, dining room, living room, office or guest bathroom or guest bedroom…then you already know that when we got married, I left my perfectly wonderful home (in my mind) to move into his.  I put my things in storage, rented it out and stuffed myself into someone else’s world.

How romantic! Not so much.  The house was so naked and sterile that it freaked me out when I first met him.  It was too perfect, simple, clean, organized…the soup cans were even lined up too perfectly! (A sign of deep rooted control issues… didn’t you watch Sleeping With the Enemy?!)

Luxor Living and Style, black paint, black bedroom, decor ideas in black, Martha Stewart paint in Francesca, Martha Stewart paint, Luxor Living and Style, Stephanie Sjoberg

Eventually I realized he was somewhat sane and we were married, so there I was…moving into this white house with white furniture, no warmth, no fun.

Jazzy and I tiptoed around on eggshells feeling uncomfortable in a new place, but then when we adopted Bella it really helped to break down the need for everything to be perfect because it clearly would never be. (Do you know any chihuahuas ???)

As far as this bedroom goes, I wanted to be fair and not make it too girly for a grown man, so I decided that black painted walls in Francesca by Martha Stewart would be perfect for us.

The kitchen is black and there is a black accent wall in the living room, so the black flows well enough with the rest of the house.

I created a black canopy over the otherwise bland headboard to create the illusion of layering and depth.  I used a wall sconce to hold the fabric.  I may do a D-I-Y post on the canopy in the future if anyone cares!

I used the bench for the foot of the bed, that was originally in the living room.  We needed it for depth, to dress up the bed, and of course, a place to sit while putting on your Spanx!  The detail in the 30 year old piece adds a high end, old world charm.

Setting the dresser top was simple.  I used an old lead crystal lamp that’s been stored in a closet for almost two years.  The statue belonged to my mom and I used old crystal candlestick holders that were also tucked away unused.  The perfume tray is perfect being out in the open, so I can throw on a scent before running out the door.  I think it looks cute and girly, too!

The tiny snow scene art collection has been stored in a closet and is something I already owned.  I was actually thinking of using it in our bedroom when I chose the paint color.

The large gold mirror next to the bed is something I’ve also had for years!

I feel the need to disclose that this bedroom revamp cost less than $400.  We all could decorate fabulously if we had an endless supply of funds with which to squander on luxuries.  Living well on a budget is an art!

The paint job took 2 cans of paint.  The only new things that were purchased were the lamp shades, the mirrors above each nightstand, the comforter and a few pillows a well as the wall sconce and curtains hanging from it. Everything was less than $400.

I really, really loathe the prospect of showing a before photo but I suppose I should for contrast.

That bedroom made me cringe every time I walked into it.  It had no heart.  It wasn’t cozy or fun.

The new look flows more with the house, it’s fun and cozy and functional and it didn’t cost a lot to transform into a happier space!

Dark wood flooring is on my list for next year, for the entire house, however the master bathroom is next on the re-vamp project list for now!

I love doing the blog posts because it forces me to stick with the time lines and goals I set for myself.  I would be interested in your comments on the project!
